It’s that time of the year again, where anxious students are running around getting documents photo-copied and clicking maybe a zillion passport size photos! If you haven’t guessed it yet, the season of college admissions is here.

A hectic time in any student’s life, every child experiences a roller-coaster of emotions; anxiety, nervousness, happiness and in some cases, dejection.

In Mumbai, the admission process is in full swing and students in the city are currently awaiting the cut-offs of the third merit list, which is to be announced on 24 June.

The process began almost a month back, with the university releasing it’s pre-admission forms on 29 May. The first merit list expected on 13 June was delayed and announced on the official website on 17 June. Soon after, various colleges also announced the cut-offs for the first merit list of the courses offered. The second merit list was put up on 20 June.

The Quint decided to visit three prominent collages of the city – Jai Hind College, Mithibai College of Arts and Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics to gauge the mood of the aspirants.

Is The Admission Process Hassle Free?

A dreaded part of the admission process is the never ending queues one has to stand in to submit one’s documents or worse, run from pillar to post figuring out the documents one needs to submit.

In Mumbai, while some students had a really smooth process, some didn’t seem to have it that easy.

“The process is quite long. Filling the pre-enrolment form first, then pre-admission, and then the post admission. It’s not that easy and causes a great lot of confusion.”
Ayushi Dagga, CBSE Board, BFM Course, Mithibai College
“About the admissions, I think the process here is very simple, they are helping us a lot and they are very supportive.”
Bhavika, CBSE Board, BA Applicant, Jai Hind College

How Does MU Compare With DU?

“The process for DU is quite simple, you just have to fill one form. In MU, it’s hectic and you will have to go from place to place for PDA files and JPG files.”
Sakshi Dagga, CBSE Board, BA Psychology, Mithibai College

While we are on the topic of admissions, it’s impossible to miss out on the Delhi University (DU) admission process. Some of the students who had applied in both universities were of the opinion that DU admission process is far simpler and convenient than MU admission process.

Should There Be Different Cut-Offs For Different Boards?

This year, the Maharashtra State Board for higher secondary has recorded the lowest pass percentage in the last three years.

Mumbai division, where the highest number of students took the exam (3.16 lakh), registered the second lowest pass percentage of 83.84, way below its pass figure of 87.44% in 2018. Comparing to the healthy increase in scores of CBSE and ISC boards, the number of high scorers (90%-plus) also slipped in the state.

With such a vast disparity in results across boards, we decided to ask students if they feel there should be different cut-offs for different boards?

“If the question papers are the same, then the cut-off list should be the same. But if the question papers are not the same, how can you judge the intelligence of a person with different question papers?”
Shreya, CBSE Board, B.Comm Applicant, NM College
“The ISC board is the toughest board, curriculum-wise, but in HSC it’s very tough to score. So I think it somewhat balances over there.”
Yashi, ISC Board, B.Comm Applicant
