With the protest of JNU students catching pace every minute, the fake news factory is working round the clock to shame the protesters.
CLAIM
Now, another picture of a girl is being shared on social media with a claim that she is a 37-year-old student at JNU. The image shows the JNU student on one side and athlete Hima Das on the other.
The picture is shared with the caption: “पहली तस्वीर में जेएनयु की 37 वर्षीय छात्रा जो अभी पढ़ रही है वहीं दुसरी तस्वीर में हिमा दास जिन्होंने मात्र 18 वर्ष की आयु में देश के लिए गोल्ड मेडल जीता. (Translated: The first picture shows a 37-year-old student of JNU who is currently studying, while the second picture shows Hima Das who has won a gold medal for the country at the age of just 18)
The image is being widely shared on Facebook with the same claim.
WHAT’S THE TRUTH?
The claim that the woman seen in the picture is a 37-year-old student is false. The Quint got in touch with the student who identified herself as Kanaklata Yadav, a 24-year-old JNU student, pursuing PhD since 2016.
Speaking to The Quint, she said, “I had uploaded the picture on Monday, 18 November, when the students planned to march towards Parliament but were stopped by the police.”
SIMILAR INCIDENTS OF FAKE NEWS
Similar cases have happened with other students of JNU in which their pictures were circulated with a false claim regarding their age.
A picture of 30-year-old Pankaj Mishra is being circulated with the false claim that he is 47-year-old Moinuddin from Kerala. The claim added that he has been studying at JNU since 1989. Actually, he is from Allahabad and is pursuing MPhil in Social Medicine & Community Health.
In another case, a picture of 23-year-old student, Sambhavi Siddhi was doing the rounds with the false claim that she is a 43-year-old student of JNU and that she has a daughter studying in the same college.
