The students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have been protesting against a new draft hostel manual, which has provisions for hostel fee hike, dress code and curfew timings, for almost three weeks now.
CLAIM
A picture of a girl is being widely circulated on Facebook with the claim that she is 43 years old and is a student at JNU. The claim further reads that her daughter is also a student in the same college.
The picture caption reads, “मोहर्तमा JNU की 43 साल की छात्रा है, और कमाल की
बात उनकी बेटी मोना भी JNU की ही छात्रा है | (She is a 43-year-old student of JNU and the interesting bit is that even her daughter studies in the same college).”
Multiple users shared the picture with the same claim.
TRUE OR FALSE?
The claim that the woman seen in the picture is a 43-year-old student of JNU and that she has a daughter studying in the same college is absolutely false.
The Quint got in touch with the student who identified herself as Sambhavi Siddhi, a 23-year-old student, pursuing her masters in French from the varsity.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
On conducting a reverse image search on Siddhi’s picture we found out that the footage is from the on-going protests. We then contacted a student at JNU who helped us identify the student in question.
Speaking to The Quint, Siddhi said that she was a 23-year-old student studying in JNU and the claims made about her on social media were false.
“The footage which is being circulated is three-days old. We were protesting against the fee hike and that is when some media persons approached us and this footage was captured,” she said.
While the viral posts are predicated on the assumption that there is something wrong with a 43-year-old mother to be a student at JNU, it should be noted that this would not violate any rules of the university or any laws.
