A 24-year-old man was tied to an electricity pole in Jharkhand, beaten up for more than seven hours by a mob, forced to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’. And then after four days in police custody, he was declared dead when he was brought to a hospital on 22 June. All this for allegedly stealing a bike.

Tabrez Ansari is one of 94 people who have been killed in cases of mob lynchings since 2015. At least 10 cases have been reported this year alone. But most governments don't even like to acknowledge these cases of vigilantism as something serious and there's barely been any justice at all. How has mob lynching turned into a trend?
