Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Monday, 16 July, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting him to ensure the passage of the Women's Reservation Bill in the upcoming monsoon session of the Parliament.

Attaching a copy of his letter, Rahul tweeted: “Our PM says he’s a crusader for women’s empowerment? Time for him to rise above party politics, walk-his-talk & have the Women’s Reservation Bill passed by Parliament (sic)."

The Gandhi scion added that the bill had the "unconditional support" of the Congress party. Underscoring PM Modi's repeated emphasis on "women empowerment" during his public rallies, Rahul wrote: “What better way to demonstrate your commitment to the cause of women than offering your unconditional support to the passage of the Women Reservation's Bill.”

Referring to the support the ruling party enjoyed in the upper house of the Parliament, Rahul said that all this bill needed was the backing of the BJP and other NDA constituents.

"In order to raise awareness and build public support, the Congress party has collected 3.2 million signatures of Indian men and women in support of the bill,” he wrote in the letter, adding that the ratification of the bill will lead to increased and "meaningful" participation of women in the upcoming elections.
