Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Maharashtra minister Anil Deshmukh walked out of Mumbai's Arthur Road jail on Wednesday, 28 December, days after securing bail in a corruption case being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Thronged by supporters, Deshmukh walked out of jail at 5 pm, a day after the Bombay High Court refused to stay its order granting him bail in a case registered by the CBI.

Ajit Pawar flown down to Mumbai in chopper: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde arranged a government plane for Leader of Opposition Ajit Pawar, MLA Chhagan Bhujbal, and MLA Dilip Wales Patil to Mumbai to meet Deshmukh as he walked out of prison after over a year.

The case against Deshmukh: Deshmukh has two cases against him for which investigation is underway. In the money laundering case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate, Deshmukh was arrested on 21 November last year. The corruption case is being investigated by the CBI.

Deshmukh has been accused of misusing his position as the state home minister to launder money.

On 12 December, though the Bombay High Court granted him bail, the CBI approached the court against it. However, Justice SG Chapalgaonkar denied it, and Deshmukh walked out of jail after over a year of confinement.
