Union Home Minister and BJP president Amit Shah is likely to continue as the party chief till the Assembly polls in Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Haryana are completed later this year, a Deccan Chronicle report said. Polls are also slated to take place in Jammu and Kashmir by the end of the year.

Sources told Deccan Chronicle that there is a rising demand within both the BJP and the RSS for Shah to continue as the party president till October, when Assembly polls in these key BJP-led states are over.

The BJP usually follows the principle of “one man, one post”, but the view within the Sangh Parivar at the moment seems to be that the current leadership should continue the victories that started with the Lok Sabha polls win.

According to the report, while JP Nadda’s name is being suggested for the post, the Sangh Parivar is not inclined to bring in any change in the leadership yet.

However, the party has reportedly started holding organisational polls in its state units, which will eventually function to elect the new BJP president. A president is selected by “unanimous” decision.

According to party sources, Shah met with the BJP’s top leaders from the three Assembly poll-bound states, holding three separate meetings with them, ahead of the polls in October or November this year. The meetings were reportedly focused on the problem areas for the BJP in Assembly polls.

BJP holds all 11 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana, 11 out of 14 seats in Jharkhand, while in Maharashtra, the BJP-Shiv Sena combine won 41 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats, with the BJP winning 23 alone.

Shah has called a meeting of all State Committee General Secretaries of the party on 13-14 June, to discuss the upcoming state committee elections, among other issues. According to News18, 13 June will see a day-long meeting at the BJP headquarters, chaired by Shah.
