280 Law & Order Incidents Since Abrogation of Art 370: J&K Police

The highest number of incidents recorded on a single day in the Valley was 24 on 17 August.

There have been at least 280 incidents of law and order across 10 districts in the Kashmir Valley in the three weeks since the removal of Article 370, said an integral report by Jammu and Kashmir police.

The police report, according to The Indian Express, stated that Srinagar alone has had more than 160 law and order incidents between 5-27 August.

Reportedly, there have been nearly 22 incidents in Pulwama and 18 in Baramulla. The highest number of incidents recorded on a single day in the Valley was 24 on 17 August.

Srinagar Witnesses ‘Maximum Protests’

Within Srinagar, areas of Safakadal, Soura and Nigeen have been witness to maximum protests since the Jammu and Kashmir administration imposed a lockdown on communication and movements within the state, even before the 5 August announcement.

The Safakdal area in downtown Srinagar has reported over 30 incidents, Soura has reported 20 and Nigeen, around 15.

Official sources have said that at least 80 civilians have sustained pellet injuries in these incidents and that two persons are currently undergoing treatment in hospitals.

On Friday, in a first of its kind incident since the revocation of Article 370, a shopkeeper was shot at by militants in Parim Pora, on outskirts of Srinagar.

Gen Rawat Reviews ‘Security Situation’ in J&K

Army Chief General Bipin Rawat has begun his two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Friday to review operational preparedness of the forces along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Valley.

This is General Rawat's first visit to the state since Article 370's revocation.

Soon after his arrival, General Rawat visited forward areas along the LoC, an Army official said.

His counterpart, Qamar Javed Bajwa on Friday, claimed that the “deteriorating situation” in Kashmir is a threat to regional peace, reported PTI.

Bajwa had visited the headquarters of Gujranwala Corps where he was briefed about the operational preparedness, according to a brief statement issued by the army.

Fresh restrictions were imposed in Kashmir on on the same day, as a preventive measure ahead of Friday congregational prayers, PTI reported.

In Jenab Sahab Soura, an area that has been strained since the first day of the lockdown, around 1,000 people gathered for the prayers. However, prayers have reportedly not been offered at Srinagar's Jamia Masjid.

The Supreme Court, on Wednesday referred to a five-judge constitution bench will hear all PILs challenging Article 370's revocation in October.
