I am a non-maths student with Commerce IP in class 12. I wanted to know if I would be eligible for courses like BBA, BBS, BBE in DU? I will be grateful if you could also send me the list of courses for which I am eligible along with their admission criteria (if there is any entrance exam or it’s on merit base).
Aarja Kaur

Hi Aarja,

From your question I’m picking up that you are interested in business courses offered by Delhi University. I’m afraid that you will not be able to apply for the Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), BA (Hons), Business Economics (BBE) and Bachelor of Business Administration (Financial Investment Analysis) as these courses require students to have studied Mathematics till class 12.

However, following are some of the courses offered by DU that you can apply for:

You can apply for these above courses if you have passed class 12 with 50% marks, however, the cut-offs for the same can go up to 97% as there is a huge demand for these courses. Since these courses do not require students to study mathematics till class 12, you have a fair chance of securing admission.

It is good to keep your options open and not limit the universities that you want to apply to. For your information, you can check some of the top colleges and universities offering BBA courses:

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (IPU) for example is one of the top universities in Delhi and the BBA courses offered by it are open to students from non-math background. Admissions to IPU’s BBA courses are done on the basis of entrance exam, ie: IPU CET BBA.

I am a 12th passed student. I secured 67% in ISC Board with PCB stream. Could you please suggest me a good college in Kolkata to pursue B.Sc in Biochemistry? Also is there any other course that I can opt for apart from B.Sc?
Ritu Kashyap

Since you are interested in B.Sc. courses, I would suggest that you go through the list of popular B.Sc courses that you can apply for.

It is difficult to say which college you will be able to secure an admission in as seats are allocated on the basis of merit lists and cut-offs that change every year. Therefore, you will have to apply in order to find out for sure but here are some of the colleges that offer B.Sc in Biochemistry in Kolkata.

All these are good colleges but I’ll recommend that you look a little beyond Kolkata. If you cannot go out of state in order to pursue your education then you must at least look for colleges in other cities of West Bengal that offer your preferred courses.

I have completed my graduation. But I’ll be taking a gap year to prepare for various entrance exams in B-schools. How should I utilise this time that would help me with my future studies and career?
Soumya Daniel

Hi Soumya,

It’s good to know that you have a clear focus in mind. Getting admission in good B-schools is a task that requires extreme hard work, practice and clarity of what you want to do in life and what your requirement is.

Depending on what your interests are, you can shortlist colleges for yourself that you wish to target and accordingly plan how to tackle the respective MBA entrance exams. For example, if you have an inclination towards human resource development, you can aim to crack XAT and get admission in XLRI Jamshedpur, a B-school best known for this specialisation. Alternatively, if you have an interest in other MBA specialisations such as Marketing Communications, your ideal choice can be MICA Ahmedabad. Similarly, you can target colleges for other specialisation interests as well.

There are a large number of B-schools in India – both government and private that offer good Return on Investment (ROI) while offering good placement packages.

Further, since you are taking a gap year to prepare for entrance exams, your focus should be on clearing your concepts in aptitude based questions and practicing as many questions and mock tests possible to improve time management skills for the exams. You should be well-versed with the exam pattern of each entrance test and should try and channel your approach accordingly. You can even enrol into coaching centres if you wish to seek guidance from experts.

MBA entrance exams usually take place between October-February every year. The process isn’t over with the exams, you should also prepare yourself to clear the GD, WAT and PI for final selection.

Is there any advantage of gap year? I passed my class 10 in 2014 and appeared in my class 12 in 2018. Would I be eligible to take admission in DU and any other colleges?
Jannat Sharma

Hello Jannat,

Although there is no advantage of a gap year if you have not been preparing for entrance exams, you can turn a gap year into your advantage if you have pursued a short term course of a part time job in that duration. In your case, if you have not pursued a course or job during the gap years then you can always tell the institute a valid reason explaining those gap years. Most universities are considerate if students have a valid reason to explain the gap years like family emergencies, lack of funding and other financial reasons.

Coming to the second part of your query, DU does not specify whether a student has to pass 10+2 in consecutive years.

The website of the University also doesn’t specify that students with gap years cannot take admission in DU colleges. However, the competition in the university will be tough as cut-offs are very high. Therefore, you can also consider other universities in Delhi like IPU, Ambedkar University, JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia, etc.

I have completed my graduation B.Com (Hons) with 76% marks in 2016. Last year, I couldn’t qualify beyond the interview round in an MBA entrance of a Central University. Would I be able to get admission in DU for M.Com? I have an interest in teaching but it takes a lot of time. I want to work in Gulf countries, what would you advise me to pursue?
Anonymous query

Hi,

M.Com admissions at Delhi University are done in two categories. One is direct admission on the basis of the merit list prepared by the Department of Commerce of DU for those who have passed B.Com for DU itself. But since we do not know if you did your graduation from DU or elsewhere and also because you completed it in 2016, you are not eligible for this category.

You will have to appear for the second option, which is through the entrance test for M.Com admissions and qualify in it in order to secure admission at DU. You will apply through the official website for the same. The M.Com entrance test at DU is tentatively scheduled for 20th June 2018 from 4pm to 6pm.

Furthermore, if you are interested in teaching, you can opt complete your Masters degree and appear for UGC NET examination to be eligible for the post of Assistant Professors. Alternatively, if you want to move to the Gulf, you will be able to find jobs in the commerce field.
