Delhi’s Odd Even Scheme Is Returning to Tackle Air Pollution

The odd-even scheme will soon be returning to Delhi’s roads, but not if the pollution doesn’t cross the danger mark

The odd-even scheme will soon be returning to Delhi’s roads to combat air pollution, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced.

When Will it be Introduced?

The car rationing scheme will be introduced between November 4-15. Cars with number plates ending in an odd number will only be allowed to ply on odd-numbered days. While cars with number plates ending in an even number will be allowed to ply on even numbered days.

Does it Apply To All Days?

The weekends are an exception. The rule is applicable only for weekdays.

What About the Exceptions?

Chief Minister Kejriwal has yet not given any details about the categories of commuters exempted under this rule. In its previous avatars, exemptions had been granted to women, VIPs and two-wheelers.
However, Mr. Kejriwal made this statement about the exemptions instead.

We will take into consideration all findings from the previous odd-even experience.

But Why is It Being Done?

Mr. Kejriwal has announced that the scheme is just one of the steps being taken by the Delhi government to combat air pollution. Other measures part of the seven-point action plan include providing masks to the masses, a mechanised sweeping of roads, plantation of trees, and tailor-made plans for the 12 pollution hot spots in the Capital.

However, the CM says if pollution does not cross the danger levels, the odd-even scheme will not be implemented.
