Winter is here!

With freezing temperatures, heavy dressing, and endless cups of tea and coffee, we rarely give drinking water a thought, and even though we don’t realise it, we sweat under those heavy layers of clothing.

Dehydration in winters is common. But here’s the thing – staying hydrated in this season is not as difficult as it is made out to be.

1. Winter Fruits to Stay Hydrated

Winter is the ideal season to indulge in fruits. There are just so many of them – grapes, pears, cranberries, pomegranates, apples, oranges and more. The water content in these fruits speaks for itself.

These fruits are loaded with antioxidants, fill you up with vitamin C, help fight flu and allergies in addition to keeping you hydrated.

2. Slash Caffeine

A lot of us run on coffee and more so in winters.

But caffeine ain’t doing you any good. It is diuretic and expels water from the body.

We aren’t saying let go of it completely but at least keep a watch on your caffeine consumption.

3. Say Hello to Soups in Winters

One of the best things about winters is an array of warm liquids at our disposal, soups being a favourite. They are packed with nutrients, are warm and when sprinkled with salt help the body retain water. Besides, what is more comforting than a cup of steaming soup when the mercury dips.

Including broths and soups in your diet during winters helps retain water. However, make sure you do not go overboard in adding excess salt to the soups. You can use sea salt or rock salt rather than using too much of normal salt.

4. Keep These Hydrating Drinks Close

Don’t feel like drinking water in the cold? Try these:

Begin your day with warm water with just the right amount of lemon squeezed in it and a pinch of rock salt perhaps. (Yes, this ritual remains same year round). One, it keeps you hydrated and second, it ensures you aren’t low on vitamin C.

Put a reminder on your phone to have some coconut water once a day. How does it matter if it’s freezing cold outside? Coconut water – due to its excellent electrolyte composition – rejuvenates the body and keeps it hydrated.

Packed with antioxidants, regenerative properties and more, aloe water is going to keep you hydrated in winters too. Squeeze aloe in water to get that glow even in dull, drab weather.

Likewise, water infused with fruits makes for great winter drinks. The sugar gets diluted, it becomes tasty and keeps you super-hydrated.

Cucumber and beet water is also recommended as they are devoid of natural sugars (unlike fruits) and are high on vitamins, minerals and electrolytes.

The winter season is also a good time to invest in herbal teas – chamomile, rose tea and the likes. They are caffeine-free, help soothe your nerves and also keep you hydrated. Similarly, chia seed water is a great hydrating drink for winters. It is healthy and keeps your energy levels high to get through the otherwise lazy winters.
