In the aftermath of 2019 Lok Sabha results, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President, Raj Babbar has on Friday, 24 May, offered to resign from the post and is awaiting the party’s response.
Babbar resignation offer comes after the massive defeat suffered by Congress party in the state and across India.
In UP, the Congress was restricted to only one seat, thereby losing the remaining 72 seats it contested during 2019 polls.
Babbar also lost from the Fatehpur Sikri Lok Sabha to BJP's Raj Kumar Chahar by 4,95,119 votes. Even Congress President, Rahul Gandhi lost in Amethi – a traditional seat of his family to the BJP's Smriti Irani by over 55,000 votes.
Sweeping the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Bhartiya Janata Party-led NDA secured over 350 seats, with the saffron party alone bagging roughly 290 seats, as per the latest Election Commission trends.
Congress has won 52 seats.
