Tejasvi Surya, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate from Bengaluru South constituency in Karnataka, has been in the public eye after the party on Tuesday, 26 March, announced its decision to field him from a seat which is considered a BJP bastion.

And with the public eye turning towards him, an old tweet (which has now been deleted) has become an embarrassment for the 28-year-old lawyer and BJP youth wing leader.

In a 2014 tweet, Tejasvi had written about “dreading” the day Women’s reservation Bill becomes a reality. The women’s reservation has been stalled over the years with members across party lines blocking it.

“Dread the day when women’s reservations becomes a reality,” Surya tweeted in June 2014.

“With the exception of Women’s Reservation in Parliament, Modi govt agenda is inspiring. Dread d day when women’s reservations becomes a reality (sic),” Surya tweeted in June 2014, days after Narendra Modi was sworn-in as the prime minister.

The BJP central leadership announced the name of 28-year-old Surya past midnight last night. And according to state unit BJP president BS Yeddyurappa, the Karnataka BJP had proposed only Surya's name.

The seat was earlier represented by Union Minister Ananth Kumar, a six-time MP from the seat, who passed away last year.
