Finance Minister Arun Jaitley came out in support of Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari’s plan to considerably bring down the use of red beacons and limit it to only 5 dignitaries, according to a Times of India report.

According to the report Arun Jaitley referred to red beacons as a ‘feudal relic’ and recommended they should be used sparingly.

In September 2013, the Supreme Court had asked the Centre and state governments to bring down the number of dignitaries using the red beacon to make travel for the common man more convenient. The apex court had said,

The widespread use of red lights on government vehicles is reflective of the mentality of those who served British government and treated the natives as slaves.
