A third shooting was reported in Iowa at a school that runs a mentorship programme for at-risk youth.
The death toll in the Half Moon Bay shooting is at 7, with three more victims in critical condition.
Two students have reportedly been killed while an employee has been injured in the Iowa school shooting.
The suspect in the Half Moon Bay shooting was identified as 67-year-old Chunli Zhao and has been taken into custody, according to law enforcement.

What they're saying: "At the hospital meeting with victims of a mass shooting when I get pulled away to be briefed about another shooting. This time in Half Moon Bay. Tragedy upon tragedy," said California Governor Gavin Newsom.
“We are sickened by today's tragedy in Half Moon Bay [...] We have not even had time to grieve for those lost in the terrible shooting in Monterey Park. Gun violence must stop,” said Dave Pine, president of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors.
“We are saddened to learn of another act of gun violence, especially one that impacts an organization that works closely with some of our students. We are still waiting to learn more details, but our thoughts are with any victims of this incident and their families and friends,” The Des Moines school district said in a statement.
24 hours ago: These shootings come close on the heels of another deadly mass shooting that took place on Sunday earlier in Los Angeles' Monterey Park.
The gunman, 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, allegedly killed 10 people and later shot himself, according to local authorities.
The Star Ballroom Dance Studio was the gunman's first stop, after which he went to the Lai Lai Ballroom near Alhambra with the alleged intention to kill more people.
However, patrons fought him off and snatched his gun.
The big picture: While gun violence in the US isn't new, the data that's available is still sobering:
Firearm injuries are the main cause of death among US residents younger than 24, according to a study published in the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Between 2015 to 2020, about 765 people were reportedly killed and 1,366 injured in unintentional shootings by children under 18 in the US.
The number of privately owned firearms in the country is 393 million and 45 percent of US adults have a gun in their homes, CNN reported.
