Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen on Monday, 7 January, expressed his concerns over the issues that have gained traction ahead of the General elections.

Speaking at a function, Sen said, “Whether to build Ram Mandir or if menstruating women can enter a temple, should it be a central issue?”

He also said that the issues that should gain prominence ahead of the elections, are not in the picture.

“It’s amazing that when you’ve Indian General elections, some things that would have been major issues elsewhere in the world aren’t anywhere in the picture,” Sen said.

On Sunday, 6 January too, the Nobel laureate had reflected upon the current state of affairs in the country.

When asked about the intolerant reactions following actor Naseeruddin Shah's statement on India's prevalent intolerance, the veteran economist said, "He is being harassed in many ways and we will strongly protest against it", reported news agency IANS.

“Even the journalists are losing freedom which is not acceptable. The election is approaching, let's see what happens,” he added.
