WhatsApp messages can be saved on Google Drive, which is a God-send feature for people who end up switching devices frequently. And if you haven’t done it yet, then it’s high time you do. Because, as of Monday, any user who has not backed up their stored data and chats on Google Drive will lose their chat histories.

This month onwards, your Google Drive’s total storage will not include the space occupied by backed up WhatsApp messages, letting you keep them on the drive for free.

This feature comes after Google and WhatsApp had joined hands in August this year, to make storage access easier for users. For those who haven’t backed up their WhatsApp data on Google Drive, WhatsApp had asked users to backup messages before 12 November.

To make this clear, the Google Drive team has been sending mails to its users, informing them about the change, which definitely is good news for those having a hard time managing space on the Drive.

For those who still haven’t figured out the way to backup WhatsApp messages on Google Drive, follow these steps.

How to Backup WhatsApp Chats on Drive

  • Go to Settings on WhatsApp
  • Select Chats where you’ll see the Chat Backup option
  • Click on it and Backup your WhatsApp data
  • Select the Gmail account where you want the data to be backed up

You can backup the data via Wi-Fi or use mobile data to get it done (as additional data charges apply), where including video content is an option.

You can schedule timings for auto backup as well. WhatsApp messages in general tend to eat up a lot of space on the Google Drive, but with this move, those concerns will slowly go away.
