It has been couple of years since I ditched my cable connection, in favour of digital streaming platforms on mobiles and PCs. This has been possible with the availability of OTT video streaming apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime among others. Because of these apps, most torrent sites were either closing down or banned in the country.
Also, with the internet data becoming affordable and faster, streaming was no longer a luxury item for many consumers.
But cutting the long story short, if you’ve tried popular apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, here’s a look at few more video streaming apps that can be downloaded on your mobile.
If you are a big sports freak, Hotstar should be a part of your subscription package. If you’re an avid follower of football and cricket, then Hotstar is a must-have app. In addition to that, you get access to shows from channels like Star World and even the regional channels offered by Star on television.
Hotstar also has exclusive access to shows like the Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley among others. Having said that, the video quality, claimed to be full-HD or 1080 pixels resolution, doesn’t always feel at par with its competition.
These shows are good enough for you to consider signing up for Hotstar, available in multiple payment options, starting from Rs 199 per month. Prior to paying for its service, you can opt for a 30-day trial period.
Available: Android and iOS
Remember Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, the popular Indian television show with characters like Tulsi and Mihir? These guys are trying their luck in the digital space with Alt Balaji.
The company claims the shows on this platform are targeted at youth. The range of shows is very limited for now. You end up paying Rs 100 for three months and you have another plan priced at Rs 300 a year. For these prices, you can download the content and watch it offline.
Available: Android and iOS
This is Jio’s video streaming app, available to every Jio user in the country. For others, they can download it from Google Play Store for Android phones or Apple app store for iPhone folks. Jio Cinema has movies across genres, including Hollywood.
Sign in with your Jio mobile number, or you can login via a Google ID. The content library is constantly upgraded, with regional movies also available on the platform. It is worth checking out, especially for Jio users who can access it without paying a penny extra.
Available: Android and iOS
Hooq is one of the affordable streaming apps out there. This app costs Rs 89 for a month’s subscription, and I find it to be one of the dark horses of the segment.
Popular titles include the Big Bang Theory, Gotham from the DC Universe, Supergirl, The Flash and movies like Wonder Woman as well. Not bad for a rank outsider, right? You can rent some of these movies to watch.
Available: Android and iOS
This app has been around for more than five years, but its popularity has grown after getting telecast rights for the Fifa World Cup 2018 in Russia and also the India tour of England cricket series this year.
The service is a work in progress, but thanks to Sony’s bouquet of shows across different languages, it has found takers. The app crashes frequently and even after paying for its service, people complained that there was a 5-minute lag in the live telecast during the soccer World Cup this year. But if cricket is something you can’t miss, then Sony Liv (for free) is worth checking out.
