Swiggy, online food ordering and delivery app, on Tuesday launched Stores - which can be used to order groceries, health supplements, meat and other day-to-day essentials right at your doorstep.

The company has claimed Stores would connect people to every store, retailer or brand -- both online and offline -- and deliver goods within an hour. The platform, made available within the main Swiggy app, has also been designed to act as a directory of popular stores and lists bestsellers, the company said in a post.

For now, Stores will be available to Swiggy users in Gurugram, where it goes up against Dunzo, another delivery startup offering its service in the region.

Swiggy has joined hands with over 3,500 outlets in the city, including over 200 stores that cater to products like fruits, vegetable and even pet care.

The service also comprises of brands like Apollo Pharmacy, Guardian Pharmacy for medical care, and gift service providers like Ferns N Petals.

Food delivery is a booming business in India but competition from Zomato, Ola’s FoodPanda and Uber Eats is likely to have pushed Swiggy to look at other avenues to rake in the moolah.

And grocery delivery is probably the more lucrative space, if tapped into the business from all corners. Having said that, Swiggy continues to add more cities to its food delivery line up and with fresh funds in its armoury, it’s unlikely to slow down.

While it’s still in beta for now, it’ll be interesting to see if Swiggy manages to bundle special membership plans like Super with its Stores platform as well, offering greater incentive to its consumers, luring them into making the move to Stores.
