OnePlus users in India and other parts of the world got a surprise Christmas present from the company. Owners of OnePlus 5 and 5T are now getting the official Android 9.0 Pie update via over the air (OTA) process.

Updates like this are rolled out in a phased manner, so if you haven’t gotten your slice of Android Pie yet, it should be hitting your devices in the coming days. With this, OnePlus is one of the few phone makers to have updated its existing device with the latest Android flavour.

Back in September, OnePlus, while updating OnePlus 6, confirmed that its predecessor will be getting the Android Pie update before end of 2018.

OnePlus 5 and 5T users can now make use of the Pie version Oxygen OS, which we’ve used on the OnePlus 6 and 6T earlier this year. Android 9 uses Artificial Intelligence to make the phone faster, smarter and adapt to usage.

The AI integration learns how you use your phone so that services you don't use much don't drain your battery. The phone, running on Android Pie learns how you like to set your brightness and will automatically adjust it for you.

The OnePlus 5T, in comparison to the OnePlus 5, gets a bumped-up 18:9 ratio screen, and Face Unlock, which is now trickling down to OP5 users as well.

The hardware remains the same, packing the octa-core Snapdragon 845 processor, while the camera does see a switch from telephoto to a standard lens with the same f/1.7 aperture on both the lenses. Both these OnePlus phones were priced similarly.

Other brands to have offered its existing phones with Android Pie are Nokia, Huawei and Xiaomi among others. We’re yet to see Samsung offering its Android Pie version, which as per reports is not expected to reach users before February 2019.
