The Indian U-17 women’s football team will start their 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign by taking on the USA U-17 side on Tuesday, 11 October, at Bhubaneshwar’s Kalinga Stadium.
This will not only be the young tigresses’ debut outing in this competition, but will also mark the first occasion of a FIFA women’s tournament being held in India. Under the stewardship of Swedish coach Thomas Dennerby, the youngsters started practicing together only in February this year.
Despite their inexperience, Dennerby’s girls have inspired hope in recent months. They played out a 0-0 draw against the Faroe Islands in July before losing out on penalties, and then went on to put up a spirited display in a 3-1 defeat against Sweden.
The challenge they will be up against in the first match, however, could be considered Sisyphean. The Americans are the five-time champions of the CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship, while they also made it to the final in the 2008 edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. They are being coached by Natalia Astrain, who previously was associated with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
Both teams have announced their starting XIs. Dennerby has named two strikers in the Indian starting XI - Neha, who plays for HOPS FC, and The Young Welfare Club's Serto Lynda Kom.
USA, on the other hand, are expected to play an attacking brand of football as Astrain has named three strikers in the team. Melina Rebimbas, Taylor Suarez and Onyeka Gamero have all been handed starts.
The match has started here at Bhubaneshwar's Kalinga Stadium. As expected, it is USA who are dominating possession in the initial exchanges.
USA had their first chance to score in the fifth minute of the game. Left-winger Taylor Suarez, who plies her trade for Charlotte SA in club level, received a through ball but ran into an acute angle. The Indian goalkeeper had no issues in catching Suarez's effort.
USA have taken the lead in the ninth minute. Skipper Riley Jackson did well to beat her marker on the right flank before placing an inch-perfect cross into the box for Melina Rebimbas, and the 17-year-old striker had no issues whatsoever in slotting her shot past a helpless Anjali Munda.
It has taken the American girls only six minutes to double their advantage. Skipper Riley Jackson is at the heart of things once again as she delivered a delightful corner which found the head of Charlotte Kohler. The 16-year-old midfielder's header was too powerful for Anjali Munda to deal with.
India had a rare opportunity when Neha attempted a long-ranger, but her shot took a deflection before going out for a corner. The tigresses could not capitalize from the subsequent corner.
Onyeka Gamero makes it 3-0 for USA. A poor defensive mistake from Indian centre-back Purnima Kumari, who lost possession at the edge of the box and provided Gamero with a 1v1 opportunity. The Beach FC CA striker did well to calmly slot her shot past Anjali Munda.
The Americans almost scored their fourth from yet another corner. However, Anjali Munda comes to the tigresses' rescue this time around and keeps the scoreline 3-0.
It is now 4-0 for USA. A cross into the box from the right flank was half-cleared by the Indian backline before it fell for Melina Rebimbas, and the Rutgers Prep striker launched a beautiful left-footed shot into the back of the net.
USA get their fifth goal before half-time. This is brilliant stuff from the full-back, Gisele Thompson, who first got the better of Purnima with her skills and them launched a brilliant shot past Anjali's reach to score her team's fifth goal.
An excellent spell of 45 minutes for USA, as they have looked absolutely flawless here in Bhubaneshwar. Barring the five goals, USA have also had a plethora of opportunities which they did not capitalize on.
For India, coach Thomas Dennerby would want her girls to at least show some resilience in the second half, as they hardly had any possession in the first 45 minutes.
As expected, Indian head coach Thomas Dennerby has tweaked her team, bringing on three new players for the second half. USA have also made a change as Mia Bhuta, the midfielder whose father was born in Gujarat, has been introduced on the pitch.
USA could have scored their sixth goal in the very first minute of the second half as Onyeka Gamero struck a shot on target, but Anjali Munda parried her effort away. In the next minute, Melina Rebimbas' header went over the crossbar.
USA have their sixth goal, and yet again, the Indian defensive unit could not deal with yet another corner. Centre-back Ella Emri, who plays for San Diego Surf, gets her header on the delivery as Dennerby's girls are now staring at what could be their biggest defeat in the U-17 level.
USA score their seventh goal. A foul by defender Kajal gave Astrain's girls a penalty, and striker Taylor Suarez, who looked a bit off-colour until now, placed her shot past Anjali's reach. This is now USA's biggest win in a U-17 World Cup match.
USA bring up their eighth goal, and this is certainly the best goal from the lot. Mia Bhuta, who we have previously mentioned has roots in India, attempted a long-ranger and found the back of the net with impeccable precision.
While the scoreline has remained 8-0, the Americans are flooding the Indian box with one attack after another. A ninth goal might not be very far away.
We are into the last phase of the match and after dominating from the first minute, USA have reduced the intensity of the game. India now need to ensure they don't concede again.
That's the final whistle. USA have beaten the hosts 8-0, silencing the crowd here at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar.
It will be difficult for Thomas Dennerby's girls to make a comeback from this defeat, but they could view this as a learning exercise, as the gulf in quality between the two sides was massive.
The Americans dominated the game right from the first second till the last, and the young tigresses could barely get on the ball. They will need to regroup and return will all might in their next match against Morocco, which will be played on Friday, 14 October.
As for Natalia Astrain, the head coach of USA, she could not have asked for anything more from her girls. Almost every USA player had a flawless outing, and they will be in action on 14 October as well, against Brazil.
