India vs USA Live Score, T20 World Cup 2024: Halfway into the group stages of this competition, India were – in all likelihood – expected to be on the verge of securing qualification for the Super 8 stage. That, they are, as they are likely to become the third team to confirm their advancement, following South Africa and Australia.
What perhaps was not along expected lines was that when they will take on USA in a couple of hours time, the co-hosts will also be in a similar situation – only a win away from joining the sport's big boys in the Caribbean. With wins over Canada and Pakistan, the latter being regarded as the upset of the tournament, USA have shown they belong at this stage, and against India, irrespective of the result, they will face another challenge to prove they are not here to merely make up numbers.
Although there were some apprehensions about the squad they selected for this tournament, India have so far looked impregnable – even if we are to consider the batting struggles against Pakistan.
In the first match, India bowled Ireland out for 96, and then chased it down in merely 12.2 overs – a remarkable scoring rate, be it against a comparatively much weaker opposition.
Against Pakistan, India did face challenges with the bat, but their death bowling was remarkable. In the last six overs, India’s bowling unit, led by a certain Jasprit Bumrah, conceded only 33 runs and picked up four wickets.
Toss has happened in New York, and the news from the centre is – India have won the toss and opted to bowl first.
It is an unsurprising decision, considering the pitch offers purchase aplenty to the seamers in the first few overs, albeit it remains harsh on batters throughout. A counter-intuitive suggestion could have been to bat first, so as to test the batters against a comparatively weaker side, but India have made their intentions clear – don't fix what's not broken.
"Pitch has played better in the last two games. You gotta understand what you need to do, assess conditions quickly," said the Indian captain, Rohit Sharma.
As expected, India have chosen not to tinker with a combination that has been working wonders for them. USA, however, have made two changes, one of them being forced. Captain Monank Patel is nursing an injury, making way for Shayan Jahangir. Barring that, Shadley van Schalkwyk is replaced Noshtush Kenjige.
India playing XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj.
USA playing XI: Steven Taylor, Shayan Jahangir, Andries Gous (wk), Aaron Jones (c), Nitish Kumar, Corey Anderson, Harmeet Singh, Shadley van Schalkwyk, Jasdeep Singh, Saurabh Netravalkar, Ali Khan.
WICKET!
What a start to the game for the Indians. Arshdeep Singh has struck in his first delivery. Excellent in-swinger, nips into the batter after pitching, and the Pakistan-born Shayan Jahangir is trapped leg before wicket. He does not review, as it looked as plumb as they get.
There is another LBW shout, against the South Africa-born Andries Gous on this occasion, but this delivery had a bit more height.
ARSHDEEP IS AT IT AGAIN!
Two wickets in the first over for India – this is a dream start for Rohit Sharma's team. Arshdeep pulled his length back for the last delivery of the over, and Andries Gous gave into the temptation of playing a pull shot. Neither the connection nor the timing was correct, as Gous ended up finding Hardik Pandya at mid-off.
USA: 3/2 after 1 over.
It was always going to be difficult to eclipse what Arshdeep Singh produced in his first over, but Mohammed Siraj could be content with his start. Only four runs came from the over, two of those courtesy of a rare misfield from Ravindra Jadeja.
USA: 7/2 after 2 overs.
Arshdeep Singh has proven to be an absolute menace on this New York track. Another excellent over sees him conceding just a solitary run. Aaron Jones and Steven Taylor are treading on thin ice here.
USA: 8/2 after 3 overs.
Finally, there is some respite for USA, and who else but Aaron Jones to break the shackles. Mohammed Siraj bangs the ball short, but Jones likes to hit across the line towards the leg-side. That is exactly what he did here, hitting the first six of the match.
USA: 16/2 after 4 overs.
Jasprit Bumrah is introduced into the attack to bowl the fifth over, and he has bowled six excellently controlled deliveries. Only one run came off the over of last match's Player of the Match awardee.
USA: 17/2 after 5 overs.
Excellent powerplay from the Indian bowlers. Hardik Pandya bowls the last over of the powerplay, and like Bumrah, concedes merely one run. Meanwhile, Navjot Singh Sidhu is going on and about the pitch in commentary. Rightfully so – the batters will say.
USA: 18/2 after 6.
Good heavens!
Bumrah tries a short ball, but the way it took off after hitting the surface seemed like it was launched from the Sriharikota centre of ISRO. 7 runs come from the over.
USA: 25/2 after 7 overs.
WICKET!
Aaron Jones' resilience meets its conclusion. Hardik took a cue from the Jasprit Bumrah playbook and banged the ball short, which Jones attempted to pull for a six. However, he could only find Mohammed Siraj at fine leg, and the pacer made no mistake in completing the regulation catch.
USA: 26/3 after 8 overs.
Rohit Sharma saw an opportunity to test Shivam Dube's bowling prowess, but he might not be happy with what he saw. Dube conceded 11 runs, albeit four of those came off an outside edge. Who struck that boundary? Nitish Kumar. Hate him or love him, that name is omnipresent currently.
USA: 37/3 after 9 overs.
After nine overs of pace, Rohit Sharma introduced spin in the form of Axar Patel. The left-arm orthodox spinner does not give any room whatsoever, but still concedes five runs, all of them coming in singles.
USA: 42/3 after 10 overs.
Mohammed Siraj is re-introduced into the attack. Considering he went wicketless in the match against Pakistan, Rohit Sharma would dearly love him to be among wickets today, but it is not to be in this over at least. Six runs come from the over.
USA: 48/3 after 11 overs.
Nitish Kumar is taking the attack to India – and no, we are not talking about Indian politics here.
The American batter Nitish Kumar, of course, is in the mood for fireworks, as he strikes a six and a four off Hardik Pandya's bowling.
USA: 71/4 after 13 overs.
Now it is Corey Anderson's turn to get on the attack, as he dispatches Axar Patel for a six. Fun fact – both of these batters, Kumar and Anderson, made their international debuts for different teams. Nitish Kumar is a former Canada player, while Anderson, of course, used to represent New Zealand.
USA: 80/4 after 14 overs.
WICKET!
Nitish Kumar's tenure has come to an end. Arshdeep Singh is re-introduced into the attack, and for the third time today, a short delivery has worked wonders for India. Kumar goes for the pull but the ball goes more square than he would have preferred. Siraj was stationed at deep square and he takes a fantastic catch to give India their fifth wicket.
USA: 81/5 after 15 overs.
This is bizarre. Jasprit Bumrah, often India's most economical bowler, is being taken for runs here. His third over saw Corey Taylor hitting a boundary and Harmeet Singh hitting a six, as 14 runs came from the 16th over of the innings.
USA: 95/5 after 16 overs.
WICKET!
India have got the wicket they dearly wanted, and it is Hardik Pandya who got the job done. None of the USA batters have managed to execute any big shot over mid-wicket flawlessly on this pitch, but that did not stop Anderson from trying his luck. Unfortunately for him, luck was on India's side as he ended up top-edging it, and Rishabh Pant took a fine catch.
USA: 96/6 after 17 overs.
Would you believe it? Jasprit Bumrah, who scalped five wickets in the last couple of games, has gone without a wicket today. That being said, he has bowled a fine penultimate over, conceding just three runs.
A decent end to what has been a very challenging innings for the co-hosts. 7 runs came from the last over, with Shadley van Schalkwyk hitting a boundary. Mohammed Siraj, like Bumrah, could not pick up any wickets today, but a fine fielding effort resulted in the run out of Jasdeep Singh.
USA score 110/8. India need 111 runs to win.
WICKET!
India begin the run chase with Virat and Rohit opening the batting. Saurabh Netravalkar opens the attack for the home side. Oh no! Saurabh has gotten the big fish as he dismisses Virat Kohli on a golden duck on just the second ball of India's innings.
India 1/1 after 1 over
Rishabh Pant joins Rohit in the middle and slams a boundary to open the second over with. 4 more runs come from the over.
India 10/1 after 2 overs
WICKET!
First Virat, and now Rohit. Saurabh Netravalkar is on fire in New York. Both Indian openers are out now. The Indian captain pokes the delivery into the hands of Harmeet Singh at mid-off,
India 12/2 after 3 overs
This is dream stuff for the USA team. They have got India by the scruff of their necks. Jasdeep Singh is introduced into the attack to bowl the fourth over and he concedes just four runs.
India: 16/2 after 4 overs.
Surya dada has alleviated the pressure on the Indian team. He takes the attack to his friend, Saurabh Netravalkar, and hits a six off a fine scoop shot.
India: 25/2 after 5 overs.
Rishabh Pant is India's leading run-scorer so far in this tournament, and his confidence was displayed in the six he struck against Jasdeep Singh. Despite Shayan Jahangir being placed in a catching position at fine leg, Pant pulls for a maximum.
India: 33/2 after 6 overs.
Shadley van Schalkwyk, who replaced Noshtush Kengije in the USA team, starts off with a good over. Only three runs come of it. The Americans deserve credit for how they have bowled today.
India: 36/2 after 7 overs.
WICKET!
Rishabh Pant would consider himself unfortunate, as he has fallen prey to the uneven bounce on this track. Ali Khan's delivery does not bounce as much as Pant expected it to, and before he could get his bat down, the ball dismantled the stumps.
India: 39/3 after 8 overs.
Brilliant. Even if they lose the match, USA can be really, really proud of how they have conducted themselves with the ball. Only two runs come from another excellent Shadley van Schalkwyk over.
Corey Anderson is introduced into the attack. This is a slightly surprising decision, considering Ali Khan was excellent in his previous over and still has a couple of overs left in his quota. Six runs come from Anderson's first over.
India: 47/3 after 10 overs.
Shivam Dube is not looking in any sort of rhythm, but he still managed to hit a boundary in Jasdeep Singh's third over. Trying to tap the ball down, he ended up edging it past the American keeper, Andries Gous.
India: 53/3 after 11 overs.
Yes, same headline, we know, but Suryakumar Yadav will really consider himself fortunate to still be batting out there in the middle. A Corey Anderson delivery stays surprisingly low, just like Ali Khan's delivery to Rishabh Pant did, but he somehow managed to get his bat down in time.
India: 55/3 after 12 overs.
DROPPED!
Did Saurabh Netravalkar owe Suryakumar Yadav a favour from his Mumbai days? For he has dropped the opportunity to dismiss the Indian batter. Shadley van Schalkwyk bowls another fine over, conceding just five runs.
India: 60/3 after 12 overs.
Nerves. One could sense nerves in the Indian camp. Prior to the match, who would have thought that India, the giants, will be nervous in a match against USA, the World Cup debutants? Seven runs came from Ali Khan's third over, courtesy a Suryakumar Yadav four, but the required run rate is over 7 runs per over now.
India: 67/3 after 14 overs.
And finally, at the umpteenth time of asking, Shivam Dube has connected a hit. A wild swing over deep mid-wicket gives him maximum rewards – six runs – as nine runs come from Corey Anderson's third over.
India: 76/3 after 15 overs.
PENALTY RUNS!
India would not mind, but you rarely see this in a match at the World Cup. India have been awarded five penalty runs as USA took more than the stipulated 60 seconds to start the new over on three different occasions. Besides that, six runs came from Jasdeep Singh's over.
India: 87/3 after 16 overs.
And, breathe!
Suryakumar Yadav has taken India very close to the target, courtesy of a four and a six off Shadley van Schalkwyk's bowling. Ultimately, the penalty runs might not have been of any significance.
India: 102/3 after 17 overs.
DONE AND DUSTED!
India have beaten USA by 7 wickets. It took India 18.2 overs to score the 111 runs, and at one stage, it even seemed USA might produce yet another upset for the ages. But courtesy of Suryakumar Yadav's 49-ball 50, and of Shivam Dube's supporting act, India have secured their third consecutive win.
With this win, India become the third team to qualify for the Super 8, joining South Africa and Australia.
India's last Group A match is against Canada on 15 June, and like always, we will bring you live updates from that game. Till then, good night!
