India will take on Sri Lanka in their second ‘Super Four’ match in Asia Cup 2022 today, 4 September. The match will be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Both teams have had contrasting journeys so far in this competition. India had a fantastic group stage campaign, where they finished as the Group A toppers by first beating Pakistan by five wickets, and then following it up with a 40-run victory against Hong Kong.
However, the men in blue’s juggernaut was stopped on its tracks in their first match of the Super Four stage. Facing Pakistan again, Rohit Sharma’s team suffered a five-wicket defeat and will now need to be at their flawless best against the Lankans.
Sri Lanka, on the contrary, started their campaign on a disappointing note, as they were handed an eight-wicket defeat by Afghanistan in their first match. However, Dasun Shakana’s men have since done a decent job to turn the tides.
They defeated Bangladesh by two wickets in their last group stage match to finish as the Group B runners-up, and then in the Super Four, they started their journey with a four-wicket triumph against Afghanistan.
It will be interesting to see if India will make any changes to their playing XI after the defeat against Pakistan. The decision to field Ravi Bishnoi worked out well for them in the last match, but Rishabh Pant’s form could be a cause of concern.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has lost the flip of the coin and the Indian team has been asked to bat first by Sri Lanka. It will be a challenge for India, as barring Hong Kong, no other team has lost whilst bowling first in Asia Cup 2022.
India have made one change in the playing XI that lost against Pakistan. Young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi has made way for the vastly experienced campaigner, Ravichandran Ashwin. "The grass is lesser tonight. It looks drier, and we have one change on the basis of the Sri Lankan team: Ashwin comes in for Bishnoi," Sharma said after the toss.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have selected the same 11 players who were involved in the victory against Afghanistan. "The coaching staff and the players have created the environment for the new players to come in and deliver. No changes in our team," skipper Dasun Shanaka said.
India Playing XI: KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma(c), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant(w), Deepak Hooda, Hardik Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh.
Sri Lanka Playing XI: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis(w), Charith Asalanka, Danushka Gunathilaka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dasun Shanaka(c), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Asitha Fernando, Dilshan Madushanka.
A good first over from Sri Lanka's perspective, as only four runs comes from it. Left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka's seam movement is causing Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul a few problems.
After what seemed like a comeback in form against Pakistan, KL Rahul could not make his mark today. He has to depart after scoring only 6 runs, as Maheesh Theekshana trapped him leg before wicket.
Brilliant stuff from Sri Lanka! After KL Rahul's dismissal in the last over, Virat Kohli has to walk back to the pavilion for a duck as he has been clean bowled by a peach of a delivery by Dilshan Madushanka.
Maheesh Theekshana was replaced by Chamika Karunaratne in the bowling attack, and the latter conceded 7 runs in his first over, including a boundary off Rohit Sharma's bat. India are 22/2 after four overs.
After four sedate overs, Rohit Sharma has finally decided to break the shackles and take the attack to the Lankan bowlers. 14 runs comes from Asitha Fernando's first over, as India are now 36/2.
Maheesh Theekshana was recalled into the attack, but that did not stop the Indian skipper from playing an aggressive brand of cricket. 8 runs comes from the over, and at the end of the powerplay, India are 44/2.
Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka turned to his trump card, Wanindu Hasaranga, right after the powerplay. The spinner conceded only five runs in his first over, as India are now 49/2.
This is good captaincy from Shanaka. With Rohit Sharma going after Theekshana, he went back to Chamika Karunaratne, and the all-rounder conceded only five runs in his over.
It was nearly curtains for Rohit Sharma, but the Indian captain's Lankan counterpart could not complete the catch at covers. 11 runs comes from Hasaranga's second over, with India now at 65/2 after nine overs.
Rohit Sharma is playing a captain's knock here, leading his team from the front under difficult circumstances. He brings up his first half-century of Asia Cup 2022, as Asitha Fernando concedes 14 runs in his second over. India are 79/2 after 10 overs.
Suryakumar Yadav was so far playing a knock one wouldn't relate him with, but the team management might have delivered some messages during the drinks break as he has now decided to join the captain in attacking the Lankan bowlers. 12 runs comes from Madushanka's over.
The tables have turned in no time as India are now in the driver's seat, courtesy of Rohit Sharma. Wanindu Hasaranga concedes 18 runs in his third over, which takes India's score to 109/2 after 12 overs.
Just as when it seemed the match was slipping out of their grasp, Sri Lanka have managed to somehow pull things back. Shanaka recalled Chamika Karunaratne in the attack and his slower delivery did the trick for his team, as in an attempt to hit a six, Sharma found Pathum Nissanka in sweeper cover.
As expected, the run rate has taken a dip following the dismissal of Rohit Sharma. Maheesh Theekshana concedes only 6 runs in his third over, as India are now 118/3 after 14 overs.
Fantastic work from Dasun Shanaka - both as a captain and as a bowler. He brought himself into the bowling attack, and in only the second delivery, picked up the crucial wicket of Suryakumar Yadav. At the end of 15 overs, India are 127/4.
Maheesh Theekshana brings and end to his spell by conceding 8 runs in his last over, including a four from Rishabh Pant. With four overs remaining, India are 135/4.
Wanindu Hasaranga was poor in his first three overs, but he ended his spell on a positive note, conceding only five runs in his last over. With three overs remaining, India are 140/4.
Everything happened in the 18th over. Hardik Pandya hit a six before losing his wicket to Dasun Shanaka. The Sri Lankan skipper then dismissed Deepak Hooda, but it was the second bouncer of the over and was hence rightfully called no ball. India are 157/5 with two overs remaining.
Dilshan Madushanka has been Sri Lanka's show-stopper today. In his last over, the speedster conceded only four runs and also picked up two extremely crucial wickets, sending Deepak Hooda and Rishabh Pant back to the pavilion.
Sri Lanka have done a brilliant job to restrict India under 175.
Shanaka brought back Chamika Karunaratne for the last over, who got the wicket of Bhuvneshwar Kumar but also conceded 12 runs. India's inning ends at 173/8, and the Lankans will need to score 174 runs from their allotted 20 overs to make it two wins out of two in the Super Four stage.
Ravichandran Ashwin played an important cameo of 15 runs from 7 deliveries, but India's best batter was undoubtedly skipper Rohit Sharma, who scored 72 of the 173 runs. As for Sri Lanka, Dilshan Madushanka scalped three crucial wickets, whilst Karunaratne was also impressive.
Fantastic start with the ball for India. Bhuvneshwar Kumar concedes only one single as his swing caused Pathum Nissanka a few problems.
Arshdeep Singh was called upon to bowl the second over, and the youngster conceded 8 runs. India could have had their first wicket in this over had KL Rahul hit the stumps from mid-on, which would have caught Kusal Mendis short of his crease.
The Sri Lankan openers are walking a tight rope here. Both Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka skied the ball but it landed ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal in third man. At the end of 3 overs, Sri Lanka are 17/0.
Rohit Sharma turned to Hardik Pandya in only the fourth over, and the all-rounder conceded 10 runs in his over, with Pathum Nissanka hitting a six. At the end of four overs, Sri Lanka are 27/0.
The Sri Lankan openers went after Arshdeep Singh in the fifth over, scoring 18 runs. Dasun Shanaka's team is 45/0 at the end of 5 overs, and India will need a wicket soon before things slip out of their hand.
Rohit Sharma turned to Yuzvendra Chahal for the last over of the powerplay, but even the leg-spinner struggled to contain runs. 12 runs came from his over, and at the end of the powerplay, Sri Lanka are 57/0.
With the field restrictions being lifted, the Lankan openers have taken their feet off the accelerator. Six singles came from Hardik Pandya's second over, and at the end of 7 overs, Sri Lanka are 63/0.
Ravichandran Ashwin came into the attack in the eighth over and Kusal Mendis greeted him with a maximum in the second delivery. Ashwin conceded 11 runs, as Sri Lanka are now 74/0.
The game is slowly, but certainly slipping out of India's grasp. 11 runs comes from Yuzvendra Chahal's second over, which takes Sri Lanka's score to 85/0 at the end of 9 overs.
After a subpar first over, Ravichandran Ashwin bowled a much better second over, conceding only 4 runs. At the end of 10 overs, Sri Lanka are 89/0. Shanaka's boys now need only 85 runs in the last 10 overs, with 10 wickets in hand.
Pathum Nissanka has brought up his half-century, whilst Kusal Mendis is also only five runs away. Hardik Pandya concedes 8 runs in his third over, and at the end of 11 overs, Sri Lanka are 97/0.
It has taken a long time to come, but after 12 overs, India finally have not one but two wickets. Pathum Nissanka was the first to lose his wicket by attempting an audacious reverse sweep, and Charith Asalanka then departed for a duck. Yuzvendra Chahal might have turned the course of the game with this over.
The momentum might have shifted in India's favour, but Kusal Mendis is keeping the scoreboard ticking for Sri Lanka. Bhuvneshwar Kumar concedes 7 runs in his third over, as the Lankans now need 69 runs from the last seven overs.
Yet another wicket of India! Ravichandran Ashwin was included in the playing XI mainly to attack Sri Lanka's left-handed batters and he did just that, by picking up the wicket of Danushka Gunathilaka. The Lankans now need 64 runs from the last six overs.
After a fighting knock, Kusal Mendis finally had to return to the pavilion as Yuzvendra Chahal trapped him leg before wicket. Sri Lanka now need 54 runs in the last five overs.
Ravichandran Ashwin proved to be expensive in his last over, conceding 12 runs. Sri Lanka now need 42 runs from the last four overs, with Dasun Shakana and Bhanuka Rajapaksa at the crease.
Back in the attack to bowl one of his two remaining overs, Arshdeep Singh conceded 9 runs. Sri Lanka now need 33 runs from the last three overs. Arshdeep, Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have one over left each.
Hardik Pandya proved to be expensive in his last over, conceding 12 runs. Sri Lanka now need 21 runs from their last two overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh have one over apiece remaining.
Excellent batting from Sri Lanka, and they now need 7 runs only from the last over. Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled yet another poor penultimate over, conceding 14 runs.
That's it! Sri Lanka have beaten India by 6 wickets.
Arshdeep Singh was given 7 runs to defend in the final over, and he did well to take the game to the penultimate ball by conceding 5 runs in the first four deliveries.
However, in the second-last ball, Dasun Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa ran two runs off byes to help their team record their second win in the Super Four stage.
Following this victory, Sri Lanka remain at the top of the standings, with four points to their name. On the other hand, India's fate is no longer in their hands, as they will be eliminated if Pakistan beat Afghanistan in tomorrow's match.
