India vs Pakistan Live Score, T20 World Cup 2024: Let's be honest here, the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 has not – barring a few upsets – lived up to the hype, predominantly owing to batting conditions. The tournament is screaming for an epic showdown between two giants, and it is exactly what we can expect today, when cricket's most iconic rivalry – India vs Pakistan – will be rekindled in New York.
At the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, India, the inaugural champions, will take on Pakistan, the 2009 winners, with thousands of South Asian expats in attendance.
The two teams have had very contrasting starts to their campaign. India were thoroughly professional in their eight-wicket triumph over Ireland, with captain Rohit Sharma leading from the front. The Babar Azam-led Pakistan, however, suffered a shocking defeat to USA in their first match. Another defeat might mean curtains for the Pakistani team, depending on results of other matches.
The winner of this contest could be decided by the minuscule player battles. We take a look at the five most exciting ones.
Toss has been delayed due to rain!
It was only a passing drizzle which seems to have run its course, as the players are already out playing keepie-uppies. But we will have to wait for the flip of the coin.
There will be an inspection at 7:45pm.
And we have an update!
Toss will take place at 8pm, that is, about 11 minutes from now. The match will start at 8:30pm.
The news from the centre is – Pakistan have won the toss and they will be bowling first! Babar Azam also confirms Pakistan are playing four pacers for this match.
The decision is not surprising, conceding this pitch has always favoured the teams bowling first, and the moisture on the track after the rain will further facilitate the pacers. This will be a new challenge for the Indian team.
"We will bowl first because of the weather and moisture in the pitch. The conditions suit us. We have four fast bowlers so we will try to use it to our advantage," said Babar.
"We would have bowled first too. We need to assess how conditions play and come up with an idea of what a good score is," said Rohit.
As expected, India have opted to field the same team which made light work of Ireland. Pakistan, though, have made one change, with Imad Wasim replacing Azam Khan.
India Playing XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh.
Pakistan Playing XI: Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Babar Azam (c), Usman Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Amir.
Uh oh! There is another delay. The drizzle was back again, and hence, the first ball will be bowled at 8:50pm. We have to wait for 20 more minutes.
National anthems have been sung – first Quami Taranah of Pakistan, followed by Jana Gana Mana of India. We are all set for the first ball to be bowled.
Rohit Sharma starts with the bang!
Almost everyone predicted a cautious start from the Indian openers, but Rohit Sharma is having none of that. In just the third delivery of Shaheen Shah Afridi, he flicks his wrist for an exquisite six.
India: 8/0 after 1 over.
Rain has returned again!
Not the ideal sight for the fans, as the players are now leaving the ground. It is only a drizzle, but for now, play cannot be continued.
It goes from bad to worse for the fans! The drizzle has not intensified into a proper downpour, as the spectators inside the stadium and trying to find a shade. We might be losing overs now.
The rain has completely stopped, and the covers are now coming off. Pakistani players are entering the field again, while Rahul Dravid is having a word with the officials.
And so we have the word. The match will resume at 9:30pm, that is, about 12 minutes from now. Nothing has been mentioned about any loss of overs, so we are likely to have a full game.
After a bit of delay, play resumes with Naseem Shah sharing the new ball with Afridi. Kohli faces his first ball of the day and get off the mark with a boundary. Oh no! India lose their first wicket as Naseem Shah cleans up Kohli on his third delivery with Usman Khan taking his catch. Kohli walks off after scoring 4 runs off 3 balls.
Rishabh Pant is the new batter for India. Meanwhile, Rohit flicks the last ball of the 2nd over for a boundary. Shaheen is back for the third and he gives Pakistan another breakthrough; India lose their captain Rohit Sharma on the 4th ball of the 3rd over. He was attempting for a big shot but the ball ended up in Haris Rauf's hands at square leg.
India: 20/2 after 3 overs
Left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir has been introduced into the attack in the 4th over of the innings. Meanwhile, Axar Patel has joined Pant in the middle. Amir has bowled a brilliant over, conceding just 4 runs.
India: 24/2 after 4 overs
Shaheen Afridi is back for the 5th over and Axar Patel welcomes him with a boundary and follows it up with a maximum. 4 more runs come from the over.
India: 38/2 after 5 overs
Amir returns to bowl the final over of the powerplay. Pant edges the first delivery, finding a gap and collecting four runs. On the next ball, he survives a close call when the cover fielder drops a difficult catch. Pant then strikes another boundary on the 5th ball of the over.
India: 50/2 after 6 overs
Iftikhar Ahmed joins the attack in the 7th over of the game and gets struck for a boundary off Axar Patel's bat to the end the over with. Naseem Shah takes the ball for the next over and cleans up Axar Patel. The batter missed the length delivery and the ball crashed the stumps. Axar walks back in disappointment.
India: 62/3 after 8 overs
Suryakumar joins the crease as the new batter for India, while Pakistan bring Imad Wasim into the attack in the 9th over. Meanwhile, Pant is given another reprieve as Usman Khan drops his catch once more. Haris Rauf returns to bowl the 10th over, and Pant takes full advantage, smashing him for three consecutive boundaries with innovative shots. This is exactly what India need at this moment.
India: 81/3 after 10 overs
Pant maintains his aggressive approach, punishing Imad Wasim with a boundary in the 11th over. However, just when India were looking to be gaining momentum, they suffer a setback as Haris Rauf dismisses Suryakumar Yadav, with Amir taking the catch at mid-off.
India: 90/4 after 12 overs
Shivam Dube joins Pant at the crease in his maiden game against Pakistan. However, he appears to succumb to the pressure, as Naseem Shah dismisses him with a catch off his own bowling in the 14th over.
India: 96/5 after 14 overs
Pakistan stage an impressive comeback as Mohammad Amir cleans up both Pant and Jadeja in the 15th over. With Amir on a hat-trick, Arshdeep Singh manages to survive. This has been a brilliant display of bowling from the men in green. Naseem has been handed the ball for the 16th over and he concedes just 3 runs off of it.
India: 100/7 after 16 overs
Arshdeep Singh has decided to prove why he deserved to be promoted ahead of Jasprit Bumrah in the batting order. The left-arm pacer smashes a four against his Pakistani counterpart, Mohammad Amir. The latter is not pleased, though, as he bangs a ball short immediately after.
India: 106/7 after 17 overs.
WICKET!
Is this the last nail in the coffin? India's vice-captain Hardik Pandya loses his wicket just how captain Rohit Sharma did. Trying to flick a ball on the pads, he finds Iftikhar Ahmed at deep backward square leg. For a change, Ahmed holds on the ball.
NINTH WICKET GONE!
India are falling apart like nine pins here. Haris Rauf is wreaking havoc. Pakistan are on the ascendancy, and how? Jasprit Bumrah goes for a drive on the very first delivery he was facing, but finds Imad Wasim in a catching cover position.
India: 113/9 after 18 overs.
LAST WICKET FALLS!
Arshdeep Singh will have to depart, as Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan's combined efforts finds him well short of his ground, in the last delivery of the penultimate over.
The big news – This is the first-ever instance where Pakistan have bowled India out in T20I cricket.
India: 119 All Out.
Considering the scoring India are defending, Rohit Sharma would have preferred a flawless first over from Arshdeep Singh, but that is not to be. Nine runs come from the first over.
Pakistan: 9/0 after 1 over.
This was a much better over from India's perspective. Mohammed Siraj started his spell with a boundary, but bounced back with five controlled deliveries.
Pakistan: 14/0 after 2 overs.
DROPPED!
Would you believe it? Shivam Dube has dropped an absolute dolly here. Jasprit Bumrah slides the ball down Mohammad Rizwan's pads, who flicks it straight at the hands of Dube, stationed at fine line. But the all-rounder cannot hold on to the ball.
Pakistan: 19/0 after 3 overs.
DROPPED AGAIN!
Babar Azam is the beneficiary on this occasion, but India could have dismissed both Pakistani batters by now. Babar sends a Mohammed Siraj delivery straight back to the bowler, but the pacer is a tad slow to react.
Pakistan: 21/0 after 4 overs.
Hardik Pandya was introduced to bowl the last over of the powerplay, and it seemed Mohammad Rizwan was waiting for this very over to break the shackles. The wicketkeeper-batter hits the first six of the Pakistani innings.
Pakistan: 35/1 after 6 overs.
Mohammed Siraj will consider himself extremely unlucky to not have a wicket to his name. His third over is as good as the first two, with only three runs coming from it.
Pakistan: 38/1 after 7 overs.
Ravindra Jadeja has also started well, so count India out of this contest at your own peril. Only four runs come from the left-arm spinner's first over, as the asking rate is now 6.5 runs per over.
Pakistan: 42/1 after 8 overs.
MISSED OPPORTUNITY!
India could have had their second wicket here, but fielding lets the team down again. There is a mix-up between Mohammad Rizwan and Usman Khan, and the latter is well short of the crease when Hardik Pandya attempts to break the stumps. But he could not, as the throw was wayward.
Pakistan: 51/1 after 9 overs.
The scoreboard will say Mohammad Rizwan has scored only 27 runs in 36 deliveries, but what a fine job he is doing for Pakistan! Ravindra Jadeja builds pressure with four consecutive dot deliveries, but all of that was released when Rizwan danced down the track to smash a boundary in the last ball.
India need a wicket, and they need it by yesterday!
Pakistan: 57/1 after 10 overs.
WICKET!
Axar Patel has struck gold in his very first ball. Usman Khan could not come up with an answer to a slider, and was struck on the pads right in front of the middle-stump. Credit should be given to Rohit Sharma as the on-field umpire's decision was not out, but a successful DRS call came to India's rescue.
Pakistan: 66/2 after 11 overs.
Arshdeep Singh, who bowled the first over and then disappeared, has been re-introduced into the attack now. Six runs came from his second over.
Pakistan: 72/2 after 12 overs.
WICKET!
Just what the doctor ordered for India. Fakhar Zaman dances down the track, Hardik Pandya bangs the ball short, Zaman goes for the pull and ends up edging it into the gloves of Rishabh Pant. Is there a way back for India from here?
Pakistan: 73/3 after 13 overs.
Arshdeep Singh bowls his third over and concedes 7 runs. This match is going right down the wire, but the major question is – where is Jasprit Bumrah.
Pakistan: 80/3 after 14 overs.
EXCELLENT!
India are right back in the game. In fact, they might even be the favourites now. Axar Patel bowls a fantastic 16th over, conceding just two singles. Imad Wasim and Shadab Khan need to get a move on now.
Pakistan: 85/4 after 16 overs.
WICKET!
The pendulum has swung. The tables have turned, and so have the tides. The complexion of the game has changed completely. It is now India's game to lose after Hardik Pandya got the wicket of Shadab Khan. Like Fakhar Zaman, Shadab went for a pull against Pandya but gave a simple catch to Rishabh Pant behind the stumps.
Pakistan: 90/5 after 17 overs.
A wayward 18th over from Mohammed Siraj. There was a no ball, a wide, and ultimately, nine runs were scored. Pakistan now need 21 runs in the last two overs. Will Jasprit Bumrah bowl the next over, or the 20th?
Pakistan: 99/5 after 18 overs.
WICKET!
Stop the press. Jasprit Bumrah has done it again. India are an inch away from another remarkable World Cup triumph over Pakistan. Just three runs came from the penultimate over, which concluded with Iftikhar Ahmed's wickets.
Pakistan need 18 runs from the last over.
Pakistan: 102/6 after 19 overs.
Last over. Arshdeep Singh to bowl it.
First ball – WICKET! Arshdeep Singh dismisses Imad Wasim. Excellent decision by the umpire. 18 needed from 5.
Second ball – 1 run. Now 17 needed from 4.
Third ball – 1 run. 16 from 3.
Fourth ball – 4 runs. 12 from 2.
Fifth ball – Another four. India have done it! 8 needed from 1.
Sixth ball – 1 run. India win by 6 runs.
And so, India have beaten Pakistan in a World Cup match once again! Every aspect was in favour of the green shirts in this match, from winning the toss to having only 120 runs to chase down. But at the end of the day, it is those players in blue who are smiling, as they nearly always do whenever the two cricketing giants meet. This match lived up to the tag of 'cricket's most iconic rivalry', on what has otherwise been a pretty lukewarm tournament so far.
