India vs Nepal Live Score, Live Cricket Score, Asia Cup 2023 Latest Updates: After a prolonged wait, the return of India-Pakistan action in ODI cricket was as anti-climactic as it probably could have been. A couple of days ago, the two teams were not the only ones who paid a visit to the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy, Sri Lanka. A third visitor in rain proved to be the most dominant among the lot, as both teams shared spoils in a washout.
Rohit Sharma's team, yet again, will be at the mercy of the weather gods today, when his team will face a new opponent in Nepal. Whilst the chances of precipitation is much lower than a couple of days ago, ranging between 12% to 53% during the length of the match, overcast conditions will still spark a new nerves around the camp.
It remains to be seen whether India will opt for a Plan B in this match, but there will at least be one change, as Jasprit Bumrah has flown back to India for personal reasons, with Mohammed Shami set to take his place.
The weather looks promising in Kandy, as the sun is shining brightly. Indian fans will be hopeful that their team will shine with similar glamour.
We are about 10 minutes away from the toss. ICYMI – Jasprit Bumrah is unavailable, owing to personal reasons. Mohammed Shami is expected to be replacing him.
Update from the centre – Rohit Sharma has won the toss again, and India will be bowling first.
"We batted in the last game, (now) we want to see what the bowlers have in offer for us. We just want to have the bowlers to have a game under the belt," Rohit Sharma said after the toss.
Interestingly, it starts to drizzle soon after the toss.
As expected, India have made one change to their lineup, with Jasprit Bumrah having returned home for the birth of his son. Mentioning the same, Rohit Sharma stated "There's a special reason for Jasprit Bumrah to be back home." He has been replaced by Mohammed Shami.
Nepal, too, have made one change, with young batter Bhim Sharki replacing Aarif Sheikh.
India Playing XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj.
Nepal Playing XI: Kushal Bhurtel, Aasif Sheikh (wk), Rohit Paudel (c), Bhim Sharki, Sompal Kami, Gulsan Jha, Dipendra Singh Airee, Kushal Malla, Sandeep Lamichhane, Karan KC, Lalit Rajbanshi.
Sun is shining again, the national anthems have been played out, and now, we are set for action. Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj are expected to start with the new ball.
DROPPED!
Sloppy fielding from Shreyas Iyer. Mohammed Shami almost produced a wicket in the first over of the match, as his out-swinging delivery caught the outside edge of Kushal Bhurtel. The ball travelled to first slip, where Iyer dropped a dolly!
Score – 4/0 after 1 over.
Ideally, Nepal should have been struggling by now, with both of their openers sent back. Instead, courtesy of India's poor fielding effort, they are looking in fairly decent touch, playing the occasional flashy shots.
Score – 18/0 after 4 overs.
THREE DROPPED CATCHES!
The Indian fans and management will be furious with what they have seen from their players so far, as far as fielding is concerned. A third chance goes begging, as Ishan Kishan makes an absolute mess of what should have been an easy catch down the leg side to dismiss Kushal Bhurtel.
Score – 25/0 (5).
The faces won't portray the story, but India will be bitterly disappointed with the start they have got off to, in this match. Whilst the expectation would have been to paralyse the Nepali top-order with the new ball, they are now struggling to make any sort of an impression.
Nepal are 42/0 after 8 overs.
Absolutely nothing is going in India's favour right now. Kushal Bhurtel is adjudged to be struck leg before wicket in Hardik Pandya's first delivery of the match, but a successful review showed the ball was missing the leg stump. Meanwhile, Sheikh and Bhurtel have crossed the 50-run mark for the opening stand.
Nepal are 53/0 after 9 overs.
WICKET! LORD HAS DELIVERED!
It has taken much longer than expected, but India finally have their first breakthrough. Trying to give direction to a Shardul Thakur delivery, Kushal Bhurtel ends up giving a simple catch to Ishan Kishan. The Nepali opener can be proud of his effort, having scored 38 runs in only 25 deliveries.
Score – 65/1 (10)
With the aggressor sent back, Nepali batters have lifted their feet from the accelerator. Aasif Sheikh seems he has all the time in the world, while Bhim Sharki is also focused on getting his eye in before playing the shots.
Score – 67/1 (13).
WICKET!
India have their second breakthrough, as Ravindra Jadeja has worked his magic yet again. A seemingly harmless delivery is met with a flawed square cut attempt from Bhim Sharki, but in the process, the young batter ended up dragging to ball onto his stumps.
Nepal are 77/2 after 16 overs.
Barring India's fielding, umpiring has been pretty sub-standard as well in this fixture. Aasif Sheikh is adjudged lbw in Kuldeep Yadav's first over, but DRS comes to Nepal's rescue once again, with replay showing the ball was missing stumps.
Score – 89/2 after 19 overs,
WICKET!
Ravindra Jadeja has by far been India's most effective bowler today, and he provides another breakthrough. Nepali skipper Rohit Paudel edges a delivery straight into the palms of Rohit Sharma at first slip.
Score – 93/3 after 20 overs.
ANOTHER ONE!
It has been a commendable batting performance from Nepal so far, but now, it is all crumbling down rapidly for them. Ravindra Jadeja strikes yet again for India, as in an attempt to take him down the ground, Kushal Malla finds Mohammed Siraj at mid-off.
Score – 102/4 after 22 overs.
FIFTY!
Aasif Sheikh brings up his half-century, and whilst it is his tenth fifty in ODI cricket, he might consider this to be the most memorable of the lot. Meanwhile, the decision of re-introduce Mohammed Siraj backfired, with both batters taking the attack to the pacer.
Score – 127/4 after 29 overs.
WICKET!
Mohammed Siraj has a wicket to his name, finally! Virat Kohli has taken a catch, finally! Aasif Sheikh is sent back, finally!
It should have happened a long time ago, but the Siraj-Kohli trio has finally resulted in a wicket for the Indian team, as Aasif Sheikh has to depart after scoring 58 runs. Nepal are 134/5 after 30 overs.
WICKET!
After a poor first spell, Mohammed Siraj has done fairly well in his second spell. Having dismissed Aasif Sheikh in his last over, the pacer now sends Gulshan Jha back, with Ishan Kishan grabbing an easy catch off the batter's outside edge.
Score – 144/6.
The third fifty did not come as comfortably for Nepal as the first couple, but after toil aplenty, they finally have crossed the 150-run mark. Meanwhile, for the second time today, covers were called only to be taken away a minute later.
Nepal are 151/6 after 34 overs.
UH-OH!
Rain has been playing hide and seek at Pallekele all day, but this around, it seems it might not be a passing drizzle. 37.5 overs have been bowled, wherein Nepal have scored 178 runs at the loss of six wickets.
Good news! Rain has stopped completely, covers have been taken off, and the Indian players are already warming up. Here come the umpires for an inspection.
UPDATE – Match will resume at 6:45pm IST. A maximum of an hour's delay is permitted before we start losing overs, and considering the match was halted right at 5:45pm, we will see a full-length game, should there be no further interruptions. For now, it looks promising.
Right then, we have had 13 deliveries since resumption, where six runs have been scored. With ten overs to spare, Nepal's score reads 184/6.
DROPPED!
Fourth dropped chance, but to be fair to Ishan Kishan, this can only be considered a half-chance. Sompal Kami's outside edge catches the wicketkeeper's gloves, but he cannot react in time to complete a grab.
Nepal are 194/6 after 41 overs.
WICKET!
Hardik Pandya gets into the wickets. A concealed slower one outfoxes Dipendra Singh Airee, who is trapped leg before wickets. India are three wickets away from an all out now.
Nepal can be extremely proud of the way they have tackled the Indian bowlers at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium today. They breach the 200-run mark in the 44th over, and will now aim to get as much as they can from the last six overs.
Nepal get their third maximum of the match, and it comes from the willow of Sompal Kami. The all-rounder plays an exquisite pull off a Hardik Pandya delivery. Nepal are 216/7 after 46 overs.
Sompal Kami is switching gears at the right moment. 11 runs come from the 47th over, courtesy of yet another maximum, this time off Mohammed Siraj's bowling.
Nepal are 227/7.
FLYING!
Ishan Kishan might have dropped two catches today, but he has taken an absolute blinder here. Sompal Kami departs on 48, with Mohammed Shami finally opening his wickets column. In the same over, Sandeep Lamichhane loses his wicket to a run out.
Nepal are 229/9 with two overs to spare.
ALL OUT!
Nepal's valiant display with the bat ends after 290 deliveries, as the last batter, Lalit Rajbangshi is clean bowled by Mohammed Siraj. With this, the Indian pacer becomes the second bowler to complete a three-wicket haul today, after Ravindra Jadeja.
Nepal are all out for 230 runs. India will need 231 runs to add two points to their tally, and more importantly, secure their place in the Super Four. We will be right back for India's innings!
Nervous first over from the Indian team's perspective, as Karan KC struck the pads of Rohit Sharma on two occasions, whilst also nearly catching an outside edge. The Indian skipper has looked extremely shaky so far.
India – 1/0 after 1 over.
EXQUISITE!
Shubman Gill scored 10 runs in 32 deliveries against Pakistan only a couple of days ago, whilst today, he scored 12 runs in the first six deliveries he had to face. Poor start from Sompal Kami as he concedes three boundaries.
HERE WE GO AGAIN!
It had just started to rain boundaries, with Gill smashing three fours and Rohit smashing one. Now, however, it is raining quite literally. Covers are on, players are off, and we wait.
Remember, we have already had an hour of delay. Hence, we are very likely to have a shortened chase from here onwards.
The broadcasters are reporting that whilst the intensity of the rain has considerably weakened, it is still drizzling at Pallekele. The entire ground has been put under wraps, and even if the drizzle stops soon, it is unlikely that we will have an instantaneous resumption.
For now, we hang tight!
Right, we have some important updates.
Rain has stopped completely. Covers have been taken off, and the super-soppers are doing their work now.
Umpires have scheduled an inspection at 10pm.
The cut-off time to start a 20-over run chase is 10:20pm.
Should the game resume, India will have a 130-run target.
Rohit Sharma seems pretty confident of a resumption, as he is already padded up.
Don't go anywhere, for we might have a chase coming up.
We have an update, and it is positive!
The action will resume at 10:15pm. India will need to score 145 runs in 23 overs. We have a game at our hands.
Karan KC resumed his over right from where he left, with five precisely executive deliveries. Only two runs came from those, taking India's score to 19/0 after 3 overs.
Rohit Paudel introduces left-arm orthodox spinner, Lalit Rajbanshi into the attack, and the latter has started off really well. Only three runs came for the penultimate over of the first powerplay.
The last over of fielding restrictions has gone in India's favour. Karan KC, who has looked in impeccable control of his line and length, conceded nine runs in his third over, with both Sharma and Gill hitting a four each.
Yet another excellent over from Lalit Rajbanshi. Only two runs came from the left-arm spinner's second over. India are 33/0 after 6 overs.
Rohit Sharma has taken the attack to Nepal's prime bowling asset, Sandeep Lamichhane. The leg-spinner concedes a six and a four in his first over. Indi are now only 100 runs away from the target.
It seems that the Indian openers have chosen not to play the flashy shots against Lalit Rajbanshi, who has been among Nepal's more impressive bowlers so far. 7 runs come from the spinner's third over.
Trouble for Nepal here, as the bowler who has often been their saviour, is getting treated with hammer and tongs here. Nine runs come from his second over, courtesy a brilliant six off Shubman Gill's bat.
Good start from Nepal's fifth bowling option, Dipendra Singh Airee, who concedes 3 runs in his first over. In the next over, Lamichhane faced the wrath of Rohit yet again, conceding another six and a four.
India are now nearing closer to a victory at a rapid pace. The last couple of overs, bowled by Airee and Kami, have yielded 20 runs. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma brings up his 49th ODI half-century.
Albeit facing the Nepali bowlers are not quite same as facing the Pakistani speedsters, but following a nightmarish start to his campaign, Shubman Gill will be content with his performance today. The youngster brings up his half-century in the 16th over.
Rohit Paudel introduced Gulshan Jha into the attack, who looked decent in what could well be the only over he is getting to bowl today. India are 140/0, with only five needed more for the victory.
THAT'S THE WIN!
India have defeated Nepal by 10 wickets, and subsequently, qualified for the Super Four stage. Rohit Sharma remains unbeaten on 74 runs from 59 deliveries, with Shubman Gill unbeaten on 67 runs from 62 deliveries.
Barring the Indian opening pair, the Indian spin-twins were also on song in this match. Ravindra Jadeja scalped three wickets, and whilst the scorecard will show no wickets next to Kuldeep Yadav's name, he was in control of his game. Among the seamers, Mohammed Siraj was the most impressive, picking up three wickets.
So, India are now the second team from Group A to have made it to the Super Four stage. Here are their upcoming fixtures:
10 September – India vs Pakistan (Colombo)
12 September – India vs B1 (Colombo)
15 September – India vs B2 (Colombo)
