India vs Australia Live Score and Updates: One of the fiercest rivalries in Test cricket, the Border Gavaskar Trophy is ready for its newest iteration to commence today, here at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur.
While the two sets of coaches and captains have been fairly composed and verbally restrained ahead of the match, a lot has been said and written about the pitch. With the track usually having a lot to offer to the spinners, India can except to enjoy home advantage in this match.
Rohit Sharma’s team will miss two crucial members of the Test team in Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah, but we can see the in-form Suryakumar Yadav being handed his international red-ball debut in this game.
Australia, on a similar note, will also miss three key figures in Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Cameron Green. The baggy greens will be reliant on the experienced pair of Steve Smith and David Warner with the bat, while with the ball, a lot will depend on the performances of skipper Pat Cummins and off-spinner Nathan Lyon.
We have news from the centre here in Nagpur - Australia have won the toss and have decided to bat first.
Pat Cummins' decision should not come as a surprise, since both teams would have wanted to avoid batting in the fourth innings on a track that is likely to favour the spinners.
"2017 was a big series. I can't wait to get this started. We have had good preparation, we feel we are really well placed," Cummins said after the toss.
"We have had a good prep for the last 5-6 days. We trained on the aspects in store. This is a big one. We know the importance of the series but we also understand it's about winning one session at a time. It's a long series," Indian captain Rohit Sharma stated.
We have three debutants across the two teams!
For India, Suryakumar Yadav and KS Bharat will be playing their maiden Test match. Australia, on the other hand, have handed debut to the promising 22-year-old off-spinner, Todd Murphy.
India Playing XI: Rohit Sharma (c), KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Srikar Bharat (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj.
Australia Playing XI: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Matt Renshaw, Peter Handscomb, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy, Scott Boland.
As expected, two left-handed batters in David Warner and Usman Khawaja are opening the innings for the visitors. The former knows all about Indian pitches, whilst the latter has been in scintillating form.
This should be a good contest.
India simply could not have asked for a better start! We are only in the second over of the match, and Australia's in-form opener, Usman Khawaja has been sent back to the pavilion.
Mohammed Siraj trapped the batter leg before wicket, and while the umpire initially signaled not out, Rohit Sharma's DRS call worked wonders.
Australia are 2/1.
There's the second! Australia are shellshocked, as the Indian pacers are wreaking havoc here in Nagpur.
Mohammed Shami joins the act this time as he uproots David Warner's stumps in his second over. He comes round the wicket, beats the veteran with the angle and pace and gives India their second breakthrough.
The Aussies are struggling at 2/2.
At 2/2, Australia were staring at a collapse, but it has been prevented by the dexterity of Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith. The duo, who have similar styles of batting, have effectively negated both the pace of Shami and Siraj, and the spin of Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja.
At the end of 12 overs, Australia are 29/2.
After getting two wickets inside the first 13 deliveries, India have not been able to add to their tally. Credit, however, must be given to Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith for the way they have conducted themselves, accumulating runs whilst also negating every threat that was thrown at them.
At the end of 20 overs, Australia are 48/2.
At the end of one-third of the day's play, Australia will be fairly content with their performance, despite losing two wickets early. The baggy greens are currently 75/2, and 47 of those runs have been scored by Marnus Labuschagne, who is eyeing his 15th Test half-century.
Lunch Break!
Australia will certainly feel the session belongs to them, especially after losing both openers inside the first 13 deliveries. Marnus Labuschagne is batting on 47 from 110, while Steve Smith is batting on 19 from 74.
Go grab your lunch and be right back, for the second session promises to be enthralling.
Right then, we are back for the second session of the first Test of Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023.
Mohammed Shami was handed the ball for the first over post lunch break, but courtesy of a boundary from Steve Smith, the Aussies scored five runs in that over. The second over after lunch saw Ravindra Jadeja conceding 2 runs.
At the end of 34 overs, Australia are 83/2.
GONE!
Marnus Labuschagne's resilient knock comes to an end, as Sir Ravindra Jadeja does the trick for India for the umpteenth time. A flighted delivery tempts the batter into playing a drive, but Labuschagne ends up missing the ball completely and debutant wicketkeeper KS Bharat shows his skills with the gloves by wasting no time in dislodging the bails.
Labuschagne departs for 49. Australia are 84/3.
Bow down to the Sir! He has taken two wickets in the same over.
Matt Renshaw will not be looking to relive this day ever again, as he departs for a golden duck. India's reliable all-rounder traps him leg before wicket, as a sharp turn makes Renshaw fail in his attempt to play a flick.
Another one bites the dust!
That's three for Ravindra Jadeja, as Steve Smith is having to talk the long walk back to the dressing room. He plays for the turn but there is none, and as a result of it, the ball goes right through his defence to dislodge the stumps. Smith is out after scoring 37 runs in 107 deliveries.
At the end of 42 overs, Australia are 109/5.
After losing three wickets in quick succession, Alex Carey and Peter Handscomb added 53 runs for the sixth-wicket stand. However, the resilience has finally been breached, as Carey's knock comes to an end.
The Aussie wicket-keeper attempted an audacious reverse sweep off Ravichandran Ashwin's bowling, but ended up dragging the ball onto the stumps. He departs after scoring a 33-ball 36.
Australia are 162/6.
Alex Carey's dismissal meant Ravichandran Ashwin is now the owner of 450 wickets in Test cricket, but make that 451 please, for he has dismissed Pat Cummins.
The Australian skipper, who was batting on 6, was outfoxed by the turn as he ended up edging to ball to the safe palms of Virat Kohli.
Australia are now 172/7.
While he will have a chance of redeeming himself with the ball, Todd Murphy's debut has not gone according to plans so far, as he departs for a duck.
Trying to tackle a Ravindra Jadeja delivery, the young off-spinner could not decipher the spin and ended up getting trapped leg before wicket.
If the first session did belong to Australia, India have undoubtedly been the dominant force in the second session, as spinners helped them establish authority in the game.
Ravichandran Ashwin brought up his 450th Test wicket, only to better it by one. The star of the show, however, has been Ravindra Jadeja with an impressive four-wicket haul.
Australia are currently 174/8 at tea break. Peter Handscomb is unbeaten on 28, while Nathan Lyon is yet to open his account.
Five-wicket haul for 'Sir' Ravindra Jadeja!
Peter Handscomb is his latest victim, as in an attempt to play a sweep, he exposed his pads and was trapped leg before wicket. Handscomb departs for a fighting 31 off 84 deliveries.
Australia are 177/9.
All Out!
India have their tenth wicket as Scott Boland has been completely flummoxed by a Ravichandran Ashwin carrom ball. The pacer could only contribute a solitary run to his team's cause.
Australia are all out for 177. The Indian bowlers have executed plans to perfection, and it is now time for the batters to replicate the same.
The Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma is leading the team from the front. He is off to a brilliant start, having scored 26 runs in only 23 deliveries. His partner, KL Rahul has meanwhile scored just one run.
After six overs, India are 27/0.
Pat Cummins has used four bowlers, but none of them have been able to offer any challenge to the Indian openers, who are looking comfortable here in Nagpur. Rohit Sharma is nearing what will be a well deserved half-century, while KL Rahul is also getting a move on.
At the end of 18 overs, India are 59/0.
Stuff of dreams!
Todd Murphy has his maiden wicket for the baggy greens, as he has sent KL Rahul back to the pavilion. Outfoxed by a vicious turn, Rahul ended up giving the off-spinner a catching practice to open his tally in international cricket, but more importantly, provide Australia with something to smile about after a long while.
STUMPS!
India will be happier of the two sides after the first day, as they have executed plans brilliantly with both the bat and the ball.
Sent in to see the day out as a nightwatch after KL Rahul's dismissal, Ravichandran Ashwin did exactly that, while at the other end, skipper Rohit Sharma brought up his 15th Test half-century.
At stumps on Day 1, India are 77/1. Sharma is batting on 56, while Ashwin is yet to open his account.
