The elections to the Parliament and provincial assemblies of Pakistan will be held on 25 July, according to a decree signed by President Mamnoon Hussain, reports PTI.

According to the law, the Election Commission of Pakistan proposes the dates to the president, who then fixes the final date.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party (PML-N) took over as Prime Minister in August 2017, after Nawaz Sharif was ousted on corruption charges.

As per a Reuters report, the current government, which is only the second to complete its full five-year tenure, will complete its tenure on 31 May and a caretaker government will take over from 1 June, till a new government is formed.

The polls will see PML-N go up against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, led by former cricketer Imran Khan.
