After least 10 people were killed and 10 others injured in a shooting in Los Angeles' Monterey Park on Sunday, 22 January, the suspected gunman, a 72-year-old resident from Hemet, was found dead in a white cargo van.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna stated, "We still are not clear on the motive."

The Sheriff's Department had earlier added that they are "responding to assist Monterey Park Police Department with a shooting death investigation".

When and where did the shooting take place? The shooting took place after 10 pm local time at a dance club, close to where Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations were being held, Los Angeles Times reported.

Tens of thousands of people are said to have attended the festival earlier in the day.

Who is the shooter? The prime suspect in the shooting is the 72-year-old Hemet resident, Huu Can Tran, Los Angeles Times reported.

As per law enforcement agencies, the authorities traced the white van, which was seen fleeing the scene of crime, on Sunday morning. As they approached the vehicle, a gunshot was heard coming from the van.

The suspect was found unconscious inside the vehicle, and pronounced dead around 1 pm. Authorities claim that there are no outstanding suspects.

Eyewitness account: An eyewitness told Los Angeles Times that three people came to his restaurant and told him to lock the door as there was a man armed with a machine gun in the area.

"When officers arrived on scene, they observed numerous individuals, patrons pouring out of the location, screaming. The officers made entry to the location and located additional victims," Sheriff's Captain Andrew Meyer said.

He also said that the injured persons were transported to numerous local hospitals and are "listed in various conditions from stable to critical."

Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tweeted that President Joe Biden had directed homeland security adviser Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall "to make sure that the FBI is providing full support to local authorities, and to update him regularly today as more details are known."

Monterey Park is a city which is around 11 km away from downtown Los Angeles.
