CLAIM

The video of a public execution has gone viral with the caption "After 15 mins from rape in Dubai."

The video shows a convoy of trucks and police cars storm a road, and pull out a man from one of the vehicles. The man is then laid on a rug, and a police officer pumps bullets into his back with a rifle.

The Quint first received this video on its WhatsApp helpline. The video was viral on Facebook and Twitter in 2018, as well.

Viewer discretion is advised:

TRUE OR FALSE?

The video is neither from Dubai, and nor was the execution done "15 minutes" after the rape occurred. It is, in fact, from Yemen, and the execution came a month after the accused was arrested.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

A reverse image search of one of the key-frames from the video on the search engine Yandex led to a news report by New York Post which was posted on 14 August 2017.

The headline of the article read, “Another child rapist is publicly executed for killing 4-year-old.”

A subsequent search for the keywords “Yemen man executed for raping 4 year old” led to several news reports on the incident, which detailed that the execution took place in Yemen's Sanaa on 14 August 2017 .

On 9 November 2015, 22-year-old Hussein Abdullah Al-Saket had abducted, raped and killed a minor girl.

The convict was shot several times by a police officer at the city’s Tahrir Square, then his body was hanged from a crane for the crowd to see.

The execution was supported by the Supreme Court and ratified by The President of Political Council.

The execution at Tahrir Square in the capital of Sanaa has been controlled by the Shiite Houthi rebels since 2004, which acted as “deterrent for criminals.”

(Update: An earlier version of the article identified the accused as Muhammed al Maghrabi, who was executed for raping a three-year-old. However, the accused was Hussein Abdullah Al-Saket, who was executed for raping a minor girl.)
