CLAIM
A video of clashes erupting at a rally is being circulated on social media with the claim that it depicts the current situation in Kashmir.
In the video, bike-borne men carrying orange flags and taking out a rally can be seen being attacked by a group of men, while police personnel try to get the situation under control.
The Quint received a query about the same on its WhatsApp number.
WHAT IS THE TRUTH?
The video is from Rajasthan’s Gangapur city of Sawai Madhopur district, and shows the situation after some unidentified people pelted stones at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) rally on 25 August. It is in no way related to Kashmir.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
On breaking down the video into key frames and conducting a Google reverse image search, we came across a video on YouTube titled ‘VHP के भगवा रैली पर राजस्थान में पथराव,धरा 144 लागू इन्टरनेट सेवा बंद ....’ which roughly translates to ‘Stone pelting incident at a VHP rally in Rajasthan, Section 144 imposed and Internet suspended.’
Upon using the key words ‘VHP rally Rajasthan stone pelting’ we found multiple news reports on a stone-pelting incident at a VHP rally in Rajasthan’s Gangapur city.
The Quint also got in touch with a senior police officer in Gangapur city, who confirmed the video is from the VHP rally.
The police arrested at least 45 people in Gangapur city in connection with violence at the VHP rally on Sunday, 25 August.
Clashes erupted after stones were reportedly thrown at the rally from a mosque and adjacent buildings. Section 144 was imposed and Internet services were suspended following the incident.
