Are Ranveer, Deepika Campaigning for BJP? No, It’s Fake News

CLAIM

A viral image of Bollywood star couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh clad in saffron scarfs promoting the BJP has been doing the rounds.

The caption shared with the image, “कमल का बटन दबाकर देश की तरक्की में भागीदार बनें’ (Contribute to the country’s development, press the Lotus button)“, suggests that the duo were campaigning for the ruling dispensation in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls.

The post was shared by several individual users and pages on Facebook, with one such iteration – posted by a page called Ek Bihari 100 Pe Bhari – acquiring 5,300 shares and 1,700 engagements at the time of writing this piece.

THE TRUTH

While a closer look at the lettering on the scarfs (that reads ‘Vote for BJP N Modi’) is enough to see that the photo is photoshopped, a reverse image search of the image confirms this.

The search revealed that the image was originally clicked in November last year, when the two had visited the Siddhi Vinayak Temple in Mumbai.

The duo were accompanied by Deepika’s parents, Prakash and Ujjala as well as sister Anisha Padukone.
