CLAIM

A video, shared by one Renuka Jain on Twitter on 7 April, shows a man slapping a cop in what appears to be a hotel.

Jain, who is followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the micro blogging site, wrote the following message along with the video:

"ये है कमलनाथ की काँग्रेस सरकार का विधायक अनिल उपाध्याय जो पुलिस कर्मचारी को पीट रहा है देश की राष्ट्रभक्त समाज पुलिस के द्वारा ही ऐसे विधायक को जल्दी सजा दुलवाने के लिए सोशल मीडिया पर पहल करेगी । 😡😡"

(Translated: This is Anil Upadhyay, a Congress MLA in Kamal Nath's government, roughing up a cop. The self-proclaimed patriots will take over social media to ensure that the same police punish this MLA.)

Jain’s tweet has since been deleted. However, the same video has been shared with the same narrative by several on social media.

TRUE OR FALSE

The man shown in the video is NOT Congress MLA Anil Upadhyay, but a BJP councillor in Meerut, pointed out a Twitter user in response to Jain's tweet.

According to a Hindustan Times report on the video, the incident occurred on 20 October 2018, and the man in the video is BJP leader Manish Panwar.

A councillor from Meerut, Panwar was arrested following the incident. Panwar had beaten up the cop after an argument over delayed service at the former's restaurant had escalated.

According to the Hindustan Times report, a lady accompanying the police officer raised a complaint over delayed service, following which an argument ensued. When the argument turned violent, Panwar instructed his staff at the restaurant to close the shutters, following which he began assaulting the cop.

When the cop attempted to capture the incident on his phone, the staff snatched it away. While Panwar was arrested, a departmental probe was also initiated against the cop, reported Hindustan Times.
