CLAIM

TRUE OR FALSE?

The claim along with the image is false. The Quint was able to verify that the man seen in the photo was not captured by the Indian Army, and the image dates back to April 2018.

An Afghanistan-based news outlet claimed that the man seen in the image is a Pakistani soldier, who was captured by Afghan border forces after an alleged clash in Afghanistan’s Khost province.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

On conducting a Google reverse image search, we found a tweet shared by 1TVNewsAF, an Afghanistan-based news channel.

The tweet, shared on 15 April 2018, claimed that the man in the image is a Pakistani soldier who was “captured by Afghan bored forces” after an alleged clash in Khost.

According to an article published on Voice of America, which is a US government-funded state owned multimedia agency, a regional Afghan police chief said that clashes erupted in Afghanistan’s Khost province near Kurram on 15 April 2018.

The article mentioned that Pakistan had then said that two Pakistani paramilitary soldiers were killed, and five were left injured, in cross-border fire from Afghanistan.

Further, Pakistan army spokesperson Ghafoor had then told VOA that they were not sure about the reason behind Afghan forces initiating such cross-border fires "because there is no Afghan border post in the near vicinity.”
