CLAIM

A video is being circulated with the claim that it shows people attacking a temple while women were peacefully performing pujas and bhajans. A post says that one of the women recorded a video of the incident, which is now viral across India, but that no Indian channel will cover it. The post insinuates that the attackers, who pelted stones at the temple, were Muslims.

The post on Twitter, which was uploaded on 7 July, also claims that the incident took place the previous evening in Atali, Faridabad.

The video was shared by many people on Twitter.

The same post also went massively viral on Facebook.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The claim with which the video in question is being shared is false. The video is actually of a different incident which took place in 2015.

Upon going through the comments section of the tweets, we found some users saying that the video was not of a temple but a mosque in Jaipur, showing an incident which took place four years previously.

Then, we looked up mosques in Jaipur and came across the following list:

WHAT DID WE FIND?

Upon looking at the video, it became clear that while it did show a group of men throwing stones at a religious institution, it was at a mosque and not a temple. Moreover, on looking for the video on Facebook, we came across the same video with the same claim which had been uploaded on 3 July 2015. The same post had also been viral, with over 648K views.

The video was uploaded on YouTube four years ago.

Therefore, the video has been viral for a long time.

We consulted the list of mosques in Jaipur to figure out which was the one in question. On searching for images of the Jama Masjid in Kagzi Colony, Sanganer, we found some photos which matched the mosque in the video.

Looking closely at the photos, we can see that it is the same mosque as in the video as the entrance, the three crowns at the top, as well as the sides of the mosque match. Therefore, we were able to conclude that the mosque in the video is the Jama Masjid in Kagzi Colony, Sanganer, Jaipur district.

On searching these keywords on Facebook, we were able to find a post from 6 July 2015, with the same video, saying that it showed an incident where the Barelwi community attacked the mosque in Sanganer where people of Tablighi Jamaat worshipped.

The post by a man called Mohammed Farooq Ali also said that all Muslims should be ashamed of the incident.

The Quint has not been able to verify the incident independently. However, the narrative with which the video is now being shared is completely false.
