“Trinamool Congress will field 40.5% female candidates in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This is a proud moment for us.”

This is what West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said before announcing an unprecedented number of women candidates for the Trinamool Congress in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections starting 11 April.

Among them, a bevy of Bengali film actors like Satabdi Roy (contesting from Birbhum), Moon Moon Sen (contesting from Asansol) and even more contemporary actors who have been omnipresent in Mamata Banerjee’s rallies like Nusrat Jahan (contesting from Basirhat) and Mimi Chakraborty (contesting from Jadavpur).

Trinamool spokesperson Mahua Moitra, who is also the Karimpur MLA and ex-JP Morgan vice president,  is going to run from the Krishnagar constituency.

Congress-turned-Trinamool MP Mausam Noor will fight from her constituency, Malda North, yet again.

On 10 March, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) of Odisha had announced that 33 percent of their candidates for the Lok Sabha 2019 polls will be women.
