West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she was “absolutely happy” with the Supreme Court order on the CBI vs Kolkata Police crisis. Speaking to reporters at Kolkata’s Metro Channel, she claimed “moral victory” after the SC directed Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar to appear before the CBI in ‘neutral location’ Shillong.
This tussle between the Mamata Banerjee government and the CBI (and the Narendra Modi-led central government) followed after the agency accused Rajeev Kumar of not cooperating in investigation into the Saradha chit fund scams.
From launching a blistering attack on the Modi government, to talking about Opposition unity, Mamata’s press conference after the SC order was an eventful one.
Here are eight things she said during her address.
The West Bengal CM welcomed the apex court’s order, calling it a victory for the people and not TMC alone.
She claimed that with an attempt to arrest Rajeev Kumar, the CBI had “disrespected” the Constitution.
The Trinamool Congress chief accused the Narendra Modi-led NDA government of having “destroyed” democracy. She also accused the BJP government of dividing the state and the Centre.
Union minister Arun Jaitley had described Mamata’s dharna at the Metro Channel as “acrobatics”, and claimed that it showed the kind of governance India’s Opposition can provide.
Cutting the reporter short as they asked the question, Mamata said:
She also slammed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who had accused the TMC government in the state of being “anti-people.”
When asked how long her dharna against the Modi government will continue, she said she will consult with other leaders, including those from Opposition parties, before arriving at a decision.
