A day after the BJP-AIADMK-PMK alliance was sealed in Tamil Nadu for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the DMK led by MK Stalin firmed up an alliance with the Congress.

Stalin made the announcement at party headquarters Anna Arivalayam in the presence of Congress General Secretary in-charge of Tamil Nadu Mukul Wasnik, TNCC chief K S Alagiri and other senior leaders.

Addressing the media after a meeting, the DMK President announced that the grand old party will contest nine seats out of 39 in the state. He further added that the Congress will contest the single Lok Sabha seat in Puducherry.

The constituencies to be allotted to Congress will be announced later, he said.

In 2004 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress had contested 10 seats in Tamil Nadu, while the two parties had fought separately. In 2009, the party put up candidates in 16 seats as part of the DMK-led alliance.

On Tuesday, 19 February, Congress President Rahul Gandhi had met state leaders, including PCC President KS Alagiri, senior leader P Chidambaram, and former PCC presidents KV Thangkabalu and S Thirunavukkarasar to discuss the matter, IANS quoted party sources as saying.
