West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress head Mamata Banerjee held a 'padyatra' from Darjeeling More on Sunday, 7 March, at the same time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was holding a rally in Kolkata.
Banerjee, along with hundreds of supporters holding cardboard replicas of LPG cylinders, participated in the 'yatra', which also saw TMC minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, and party MPs Mimi Chakraborty and Nusrat Jahan.
"He is talking about Sonar Bangla. But what about Sonar India? LPG prices are rising, Modi's tolabaaji is on the rise too...He sold Delhi. From Air India to BSNL, he is selling public assets too," Banerjee said, after holding the roadshow.
Earlier last week, Mamata Banerjee rode an electric scooter in protest over the fuel price hike.
Raising the poll pitch at an election rally at Kolkata's Brigade Parade ground, Modi said that the government promises a West Bengal where development and positive change would take priority.
He said, "We will bring "asol parivartan" (real change) where infiltrators are stopped but refugees are welcomed.”
Modi also launched an attack against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying she broke the trust of the people of Bengal.
He added, “Some days back, when you (Mamata Banerjee) rode a scooty, everyone was praying that you are not hurt. It is good that you didn't fall, otherwise, you would have made an enemy of the state where the scooty was manufactured.”
At the same rally on Sunday, actor Mithun Chakraborty, who has been Trinamool Congress’ Rajya Sabha MP in the past, joined the BJP.
This is the first major event by the saffron party after the declaration of the eight-phase elections.
