West Bengal BJP President Dilip Ghosh courted controversy on Monday, 4 November, with his comments on “intellectuals eating beef on roads”.

Addressing a crowd in Bardhaman, Ghosh was quoted by news agency ANI as saying, "Few intellectuals eat beef on roads. I tell them to eat dog meat too, their health will be fine whichever animal they eat. But why on roads? Eat at your home."

Saying that killing cows and consuming beef is a crime in India, Ghosh pointed out that if anyone misbehaves with the animal, he will "treat them the way they should be treated".

“Cow is our mother, we stay alive by consuming cow milk, so if anyone misbehaves with my mother, I will treat them the way they should be treated. On the holy soil of India killing cows and consuming beef is a crime.”

Among other observations made by the state BJP chief was that a distinction exists between desi (Indian) and videshi (foreign) cows. "Only desi cows are our mother and not videshi ones," he was quoted by News18 as saying, adding that the former's milk contains gold.

This is not the first time the BJP leader has made controversial comments. In the past, he has especially targeted the police with objectionable remarks.
