UNLF Chief Meghen Reaches Imphal, Says, ‘Will Work For the People’

Upon reaching Imphal, the UNLF Chief first visited Kangla Fort before heading home at Yaiskul Janmasthan.

United Liberation Front (UNLF) Chief Rajkumar Meghen received a warm welcome from supporters as he arrived at the Bir Tikendrajit Airport in Imphal from New Delhi on Thursday, 28 November. Meghen was freed from the Guwahati Central Jail earlier this month, almost 10 months before his 10-year jail term ended.

Touched by the gesture, EastMojo reported that the 75-year-old rebel leader said,

“I have been with the people all the time and I have never done anything to forfeit their trust and love. So, till the end of my life, I will be with the people of the state.”

After his release from jail, Rajkumar Meghen, his son RK Chinglen and lawyer M Gunedhor Singh, were immediately moved to an undisclosed guest house in Delhi by the NIA. Media reports attributed the NIA’s move to security concerns in Manipur.

Before heading home at Yaiskul Janmasthan in Imphal, Meghen first visited the Kangla Fort and paid tribute at the fort’s four secret sites, reported EastMojo.

The chief of the banned UNLF outfit was booked under sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and he was charged with ‘waging a war against the Indian Union’ after his arrest in 2010.

Meghen’s arrival in Manipur comes at a crucial time, when the Naga peace accord is set to be sealed between the Centre and Naga groups, led by the National Socialist Council of Nagaland.
