(This story was first published on 23 August 2017, and has been reposted from The Quint's archives in light of the Triple Talaq Bill being passed by the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, 30 July, 2019.)
In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court, on 22 August, struck down instant triple talaq, calling it “unconstitutional”. When I set out to document stories of Muslim women who have been victims of instant Triple Talaq, I found it difficult to focus my lens on them. Their stories filled me up with disgust and anger. Instant Triple Talaq is un-Islamic, and so is Nikah Halala. The women and their stories of pain inspired me to pen a poem. I dedicate this to the women of my community.
