Three young Dalits sisters in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district were allegedly attacked with acid while they were asleep at home, in the early hours of Tuesday, 13 October.

A senior police officer said the eldest sibling has told them that the accused, identified as Ashish, had been stalking her. The accused was arrested following an encounter with police personnel in Uttar Pradesh’s Huzurpur area on Tuesday evening, NDTV reported.

The accused was shot in the right leg and arrested near Baikunth Nath College on Colonelganj Huzurpur Road. A local pistol and cartridges have also been recovered from the spot.

He was reportedly on his way to his sister’s house in Bisheshwarganj, Bahraich when the police arrested him.

The accused also sustained injuries during the encounter. He is being treated for his injuries at a local CSC.

The sisters, aged 8, 12, and 17 years, were admitted to a district hospital for their treatment. While two sisters received minor burn injuries, one has sustained injuries on her face, reported India Today.

According to the NDTV report, the sisters were sleeping in their room when the attacker allegedly entered their house from the terrace and threw acid on them.

On hearing the girls screaming, their father went to their room and found that they had been attacked with acid. The attacker had escaped by then.

The police officer stated that as per preliminary enquiry an inflammable chemical was thrown from the open window. The eldest sister suffered major injuries on the face, while the other two sustained minor injuries on hands, reported Hindustan Times.
