Fresh COVID-19 Curbs in Tamil Nadu: What’s Allowed, What’s Not

Along with the Sunday lockdown that is already in place, the state has announced new curbs as COVID-19 cases rise.

Amid rising cases of COVID-19 in the state, Tamil Nadu on Monday, 3 May, announced new curbs to control the spread of the virus. The new restrictions will apply from 6 May to 20 May.

While the night curfew is still applicable, new restrictions have been imposed on shops, offices, and public transport.

Here’s all you need to know about the latest restrictions.

Do I need an e-pass to enter Tamil Nadu?

Yes, e-registration is mandatory for those entering Tamil Nadu from different states, except Puducherry, or those coming from abroad.

What services will be allowed to be operational?

Standalone vegetable and grocery stores can function only till noon and with 50 percent customers. Those inside commercial malls will be not be allowed.

Shops that sell essentials like medicines and milk can remain open.

What stores and facilities will be shut?

Besides grocery and essential provision stores, all other shops must remain shut. All cinemas/multiplexes/theatres, gyms, recreation clubs, bars, auditoriums, meeting halls, and other similar places shall remain closed until further orders.

Along with spas, salons, beauty parlours, among others, in urban areas, those in rural containment zones will also be shut.

How will restaurants and hotels function?

For restaurants and hotels, only take-away services will be allowed. Tea shops can be open until noon. Walk-in dining would not be allowed in any of these places.

What about auditoriums and wedding halls?

The number of people allowed at weddings has also been reduced to a maximum capacity of 50. At funerals, a maximum of 20 people will be allowed. Auditoriums and meeting halls will not be allowed to function.

All social, political, educational, sports, and entertainment events are banned.

Are there any restrictions on religious places?

While religious places will remain open, public worshipping will not be allowed. Prayers and daily worship can be conducted with only the staffers.

Are there any restrictions on the number of people in offices?

All government and private offices can function with 50 percent of its staff.

What are the restrictions on public transport?

Metro rail, private buses, and taxis are allowed to run at 50 percent seating capacity.

What is allowed during the night curfew?

From 10 pm to 4 am, travel to airports and railway stations, milk distribution, health services, and fuel outlets are allowed.

Telecom companies, Continuous Processing Industries, and industries manufacturing essential commodities can remain operational during the night curfew.
