A female special police officer (SPO), identified as Khushboo Jan, was shot dead by terrorists at her home in Vehil village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district, on Saturday, 16 March.
The militants shot the SPO from close range at her home around 2:40 pm, reports said.
According to J&K police, the officer sustained critical injuries and was shifted to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed.
Greater Kashmir quoted an official as saying that the bullets “had pierced her face and neck.” The newspaper also reported that 20-year-old Jan, according to the official, was posted at Shopian district development commissioner's office and was recruited as SPO in 2016.
Former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti condemned the killing.
“We condemn this gruesome terror act and stand by her family at this critical juncture,” the state police said.
Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a hunt for the assailants, PTI reported. Police have also registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter.
The incident comes two days after J&K National Conference member Mohammad Ismail Wani was shot at by terrorists in Bijbehara of Anantnag district on 14 March.
