After her hugely popular rap, Kodaikanal Won’t! forced Hindustan Unilever to settle the mercury poisoning dispute, Sofia Ashraf has found her new target - Dow Chemicals and the Bhopal Gas Tragedy.

Her latest video, released on 1 June, is titled DOW Vs Bhopal and we’re hoping it ends with the action that the Bhopal victims have been waiting decades for.

Ashraf’s rap activisim first came to light when her video Kodaikanal Won’t! dealt with former employees of Hindustan Unilever’s Kodaikanal mercury manufacturing plant demanded compensation for the permanent health damage caused by their work. It also addressed the pollution that the plant has caused to the environment around it.

It took fifteen years and Ashraf’s iconic video to bring justice to the victims.

Ashraf has now tackled the sensitive issue of the Bhopal Gas tragedy in her latest catchy tune.

A petition posted mentioned by Ashraf , on the White House’s page appeals for 31 years of US protection of Union Carbide and Dow to end.

They are insisting that the US government meet its obligations under Treaty & International law by immediately serving notice upon Dow to attend court in Bhopal on July 13, 2016.

The Bhopal Gas Tragedy is the world’s biggest industrial disaster which happened on the night of 2 December 1984, but the effects of the tragedy still lives on its lakhs of victims.

The methyl Isocynate leaked from tanks in the Union Carbide India Limited’s pesticide manufacturing plant and resulted in over 5 lakh injuries and more than 5000 deaths. The chemicals entered the water bed and soil and continues to cause health problems and birth defects in people in and around the area.

The company was later acquired by Dow Chemicals. Those responsible for the act have been shielded by America’s Department of Justice and the victims have received minimal compensation for all their suffering.

Sofia Ashraf spoke to The Quint about her earlier video which went viral and it’s success.

It has been nearly 32 years since the tragedy and the victims deserve to know that their own country has not forgotten them.

Kudos to Ashraf for driving the change that she wants to see in the world.
