Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that there is no reason to doubt the intention of the government when asked if Justice Ranjan Gogoi will be the successor of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra.

According to News18, on Monday, 18 June, Prasad said “There's no reason to doubt our intention. There's a convention in place and the CJI has to forward the name of the successor. Let that name come first.”

Justice Ranjan Gogoi was one of the four senior Supreme Court judges who addressed the unprecedented press conference in New Delhi on 12 January and said the situation in the top court was "not in order" and that many "less than desirable" things had taken place.

Along with Gogoi, justices J Chelameswar, MB Lokur and Kurian Joseph had addressed the historic press conference and stated, "democracy will not survive in this country."

With Chelameswar’s retirement, Gogoi is the second senior-most Supreme Court judge after CJI Mishra, who will retire in October.
