While addressing a public gathering in Gujarat's Rajkot district, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, 28 May, said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been working towards building the India Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel had dreamt of.
"In eight years, we made honest efforts to build the India of the dreams of Bapu and Sardar Patel. Bapu wanted an India that would empower the poor, Dalits, Tribals, and women; where hygiene and health becomes a way of life, and whose economic system has indigenous solutions," the prime minister said while highlighting the work done by the BJP government in the last eight years.
During his address, he credited the BJP government with providing houses to over three crore people, freedom from open defecation to over 10 crore families, electricity to over 2.5 crore families, and tap water to over six crore families.
He also lauded the government for opening food grain stores when people were facing a food crisis, arranging free gas cylinders, easing testing and treatment facilities, and ensuring free vaccines for every Indian.
"In the last eight years, I have not done anything that will make people hang their head in shame," PM Modi said.
BJP ministers from all levels of government will partake in a huge public outreach campaign to mark eight years of Modi government, beginning from 30 May. Ending on 14 June, the campaign will reportedly be centred on welfare of the poor.
On 30 May, PM Modi will distribute cheques to children orphaned in light of COVID-19 and will announce a special scholarship for them, BJP General Secretary Arun Singh said.
PM Modi also visited Gandhinagar where he inaugurated the Nano Urea, (Liquid) Plant constructed at IFFCO, Kalol. After this, he addressed a seminar on 'Sahakar Se Samriddhi' at the Mahatma Gandhi Mandir, which was attended by leaders of various cooperative institutions.
The Legislative Assembly elections are slated to take place in Gujarat in December this year.
