Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing the Lok Sabha on Monday, 6 December, said that the army personnel were "forced to fire" on civilians in Nagaland in order to defend themselves. Shah observed that 14 civilians had died in the state due to army firing.
Both the Houses of the Parliament have been adjourned for the day.
The Upper House had also been adjourned in the morning, amid protests by some Opposition parties over Sunday's Nagaland killings.
Later, it resumed at noon for a few brief moments but was adjourned again amid heavy sloganeering by the opposition members.

The Lok Sabha on Monday passed the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (Amendment) Bill, 2021.
The Bill provides for the granting of a status of national importance to six institutes, located in Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Hajipur, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Raebareli.
"We met the Chairman and asked him to revoke the suspension of the 12 MPs of the House so that they too could be a part of the discussions and the House function properly. We will discuss and debate on all issues and cooperate with each other," Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
"But that talk didn't go through, a piece of advice was put forth that either all of them apologise or at least the LoP say that what happened was not right and they're seeking an apology. We said it's not right & it won't happen as they were suspended illegally," Kharge added.
The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned for the day, and is scheduled to congregate on Tuesday, at 11 pm.

After Home Minister Amit Shah's statement on the Nagaland firing incident, a number of MPs from the Opposition staged a walkout in protest of the episode.
"After HM’s statement we were asking for certain clarifications but the government didn’t allow, so we walked out of Lok Sabha," said Congress MP Manickam Tagore.
The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned till 4 pm on Monday.
"The army had received information on the movement of extremists in Oting, Mon. On that basis, 21 commandos laid an ambush in the suspected district. A vehicle reached there, it was signalled to stop but it tried to flee. On suspicion of the vehicle carrying extremists, it was fired upon. Due to this, 6 of the 8 persons in the vehicle died." Home Minister Amit Shah said in the Lok Sabha, alluding to the killing of 14 civilians in Nagaland.
"Later, it was found to be a matter of mistaken identity. The two who had been injured were taken by the army to the a nearby hospital for treatment. After receiving the news, local surrounded army unit. They set 2 vehicles on fire and attacked them. Because of this, 1 jawan was killed, while several got injured," he said.
"In order to defend themselves, the army personnel were forced to fire. Due to this, 7 more persons died, while some others were injured," the home minister said.
After the incident, on 5 December evening, a crowd of around 250 people vandalised the company operating base (COB) of Assam Rifles in Mon city. The crowd set the COB building on fire. Assam Rifles personnel were forced to resort to gunfire to disperse the crowd (goli chalani padi). This caused death of one more civilian," Shah added.
Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have been adjourned till 3 pm. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to address both the Houses of the Parliament on the Nagaland incident.

T Yepthomi, NDPP MP from Nagaland in Lok Sabha, calls for an inquiry in Sunday's killing. "State government has given ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakhs each to the families of the victims. The Centre should also give adequate compensation to the affected families."
Shiv Sena demands Rs 25 lakh compensation for each of the families of the 16 civilians killed in Nagaland on Sunday.
Later, NCP’s Supriya Sule demanded this compensation be increased to Rs 50 lakh each.
