Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Friday, 16 August, welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision over population explosion, eliminating single-use plastic and respecting wealth creators, in a series of tweets.
His remarks came a day after Modi delivered his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort.
“Of the three exhortations, I hope the Finance Minister and her legion of tax officials and investigators heard the Prime Minister’s second exhortation loud and clear,” the former Finance Minister said.
Referring to the announcements regarding population and elimination of single-use plastics, Chidambaram said, “The first and third exhortations must become people’s movements. There are hundreds of dedicated voluntary organisations that are willing to lead the movements at local levels.”
On the occasion of India’s 73rd Independence Day on Thursday, 15 August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from Red Fort in Delhi. He touched upon several issues, including the revocation of Article 370, passing of the Triple Talaq Act and the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission to ensure water supply to all houses in India.
Modi also announced a new position of Chief of Defence Staff, which will oversee all the three armed forces – the Army, Air Force and Navy.
Talking about the wealth creators, Modi said that wealth creation was a great national service.
Regarding the elimination of single-use plastics, Modi said single-use plastic poses grave threat to the environment, adding that a significant step must come out by 2 October.
