In a major victory for those fighting to scrap Section 377, the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS), the foremost body of mental health practitioners in the country, has officially come out in support of decriminalising homosexuality.
In a statement on Saturday night, it said that “Homosexuality is not a psychiatric disorder.” They specify that their stance is “in line with the position of American Psychiatric Association and The International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organisation.”
These two organisations had removed homosexuality from their list of psychiatric disorders in 1973 and 1992 respectively. Here’s the full statement by the IPS.
